HELLO SPLINTERLANDS LOVERS

Today, I am gonna discuss a conundrum that I constantly keep facing during my recent splinterlands encounters. Upgrading the monsters boost their attack, health, shield and speed which on paper is good but under certain conditions upgrading some cards brings huge disadvantage. During the team selection only the highest level cards( among all different level cards one own) is available for use.

I am gonna discuss a few examples below:

RULER OF THE SEAS

RULER OF THE SEAS is an awesome legendary monster. At level 2 it gets Swiftness ability that allows it to impart all of the team mates with increased speed. This can be a huge disadvantage Reverse Speed battle rule.

CRUSTACEAN KING

CRUSTACEAN KING is yet another example. At level 3 it gets 1 ranged attack making him a target for Return Attack monsters. Also this leaves CRUSTACEAN KING unavailable for Broken Arrows battle rule set.

FURIOUS CHICKEN

FURIOUS CHICKEN is a free of cost card as it costs zero mana. At level 3 it gets 1 melee attack but this is a huge disadvantage as it makes FURIOUS CHICKEN unavailable for Keep Your Distance battle rule set.

MERMAID HEALER

MERMAID HEALER is a cool card with the amazing Triage ability. At level 3 it gets 1 magic attack which is cool but this magic attack of 1 makes the healer vulnerable to magic reflect. Also this leaves MERMAID HEALER unavailable for Lost Magic battle rule set.

Watch the battle below to see how card upgrade can prove to be a bane:

Battle Link

In above battle the enemy had a level 3 MERMAID HEALER which had 1 magic attack, whereas I had a level 1 MERMAID HEALER with no attack. The enemy MERMAID HEALER died slowly due to the magic reflect from my LORD ARIANTHUS. My MERMAID HEALER survived because it had no magic attack.

All in all, the survival of MERMAID HEALER proved to the cause of my victory.

REMARKS

Scenarios/examples like above always leave me confused about upgrading certain cards.

This has been noticed before... and on even more obvious things like it increases speed, but removes a life point.

Overall, I think the upgrades are more beneficial than not. As cards slightly change parameters (as they level) all sorts of variables to the game change. This is necessary to maintain a balance between all cards.

Good eye though! Being able to notice the little things will help your strategy and then help you earn more rewards. 🥰
