Splinterlands Expansion suggestion.

Got up this morning and saw the post by @splinterlands about the upcoming expansion, and it got me super excited! The FOMO set in, and it's not even close to being out yet. lol.

Got down to the part about land, and got to thinking, It would be awesome if we could group buy some for the guild and build up the buildings, etc. for everyone in the guild to use. So, I pitched the idea in our discord channel, and @arvid000 brought up a good point. "How do we get everyone in on it without them being afraid of getting screwed over?" Not that any of us are untrustworthy, but anytime you can make trust unnecessary in the equation, it opens up new possibilities.

My first, off the top of my head, solution to this problem was to create a guild account to hold funds and ownership, make purchases, etc. so everything could be kept separate from any one person's account, and all transactions could be seen by anybody, and that would give it transparency, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized how cumbersome it could potentially be to do it that way and there are still more potential issues doing it that way.

On to my suggestion...

On top of being able to buy and use land individually, I think it would be great to give guilds the ability to buy and use land as a group and have it tied to the guild. Could maybe even incorporate the guild hall and quest lodge onto a piece of land with other buildings. The main idea, though, is to let the guild hold the ownership, and give everyone in the guild access to what's on the land instead of just one of it's members. This may require a guild coffer as well, but I don't think that's a bad idea either.

I'm not great at explaining things, so I'm hoping this is at least somewhat coherent, but in case it's not here's the main points of what I'm suggesting.

  • Allow the guild to acquire land for use buy the guild as a whole.
  • Give the ability for guild members to donate DEC for buildings and upgrades similar to the guild hall.
  • The ability for all guild members to use buildings, etc. on guild land.
  • Require a leader or co-leader to build or destroy buildings, sell land, etc.
  • Maybe a menu where the leader or a co-leader can set goals (eg: what building to build or upgrade next) and members can donate toward that goal as they like.

I realize this might take a little doing, and some special rules for guild lands that wouldn't apply to land owned by individuals, but, it would bring that new depth and value to the guilds as well, and it can benefit the little guys / new players who are members of a guild, giving them access to buildings or higher level buildings to craft those new cards that they might not have access to otherwise.

Feel free to drop any thoughts, issues you see, or anything you want to add in the comments. I really hope they can make this happen!

I assumed there'd be guild-based components to the land expansion; but I can see a lot of ways it could get messy. If a guild leader sets requirements, and those requirements aren't met, and the player gets booted, dividing up the spoils can be messy.
Our Guild, Roaring Twenties, has a DEC in/DEC out system in place; which has worked okay so far; but only because contributions are mandatory, and all in the same denomination.
To be honest, the only way I can see Guild lands working, is if the guild leader sets a very high standard for being booted from the guild. Something like 6 months of inactivity.
(We've tried to work around this by letting members sell their seat to anyone they like; the thinking being, that if you're not playing, you'll want to sell up and cash out.)
Leaders could require ongoing membership fees, used to buy assets on behalf of the guild, but then using those assets to create spells and items; then dividing them up between members, might be an issue.
Particularly as this new 'shard' factor is required. Does the guild require x DEC and y shards per month?
If there's a way to make it work, I'm keen to get involved; but there are a lot of ways it could get ugly.

Yea, it could get messy real quick if you're not careful, but I'm sure there's a way to work it out. I never really thought about getting anything back if I left or got booted from the guild. We have a good core group in the one I'm in. I always saw it as incentive to stay active, but I can see situations where that could go wrong. Maybe make a token for guild seats, and add them to the market? If you get booted, you're no longer able to benefit from the guild, and have a certain amount of time to put your seat on the market or it times out and you lose it, but it can stay on the market as long as it takes to sell, or maybe even transfer it to another guild?

As far as the use of the land, I think it would be better to either have special rules built in for land owned by guilds, or maybe have a whole separate type of land that's exactly the same, but designed on the back end specifically for guilds that would allow for use by multiple people in the guild to use it at the same time or something... That may take a lot of work though. Just a thought.

I started an account @roaringtwenties, to take any ongoing subscription fees, (I don't think you can overcontribute to the Guild Hall) so we could do any guild crafting stuff there.
Unless there are bulk discounts or efficiencies of scale, we're probably better off just running our own projects. Much easier logistically.
