This post is a continuation of the Burning DEC series where we look a closer look what is the rate of burning the in game Splinterlands currency DEC.

How is DEC burned?

Here are some of the ways for burning DEC:

  • Buying Potions
  • Buying Orbs
  • Buying Skins
  • Guilds Upgrade
Other than this DEC has a lot of use case as buying individual cards, buying packs and the tournaments are paid in DEC. This use cases don’t burn DEC, but they provide incentive to hold some.

Before HF21/22 DEC was used for vote buying as well.

Untamed Era and change in rewards system

The Splinterlands game have entered the UNTAMED era. The new Splinterlands packs, were realized on November 30th. After a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter and Fundition players were finally able to open their packs, just after the season ending. In the last month there was a spike in the DEC burnt at the end of the month since a lot of the players were using potion to open the packs.

With the last changes in the reward system players are rewarded with potions and orbs as well. Orbs are quite rare to get but potions are very often. This means that buying potions with DEC should be even lower now, since payers are getting those as rewards. Basically, DEC should be used more in just buying packs. DEC used for packs buying is not burned. At least not now.

All time DEC Burned

Here is the chart for the all time DEC burned vs created.

02.jpg

Notes:The vertical Y axis is on a logarithmic scale for better readability. There are few days with more than 10M burned and those are cut from the chart.

The DEC Created line is the daily reward pool according to the anouncment from @steemmonsters a 1 million per day and going down 1% each 30 days. It doesn’t include the DEC created from burning cards.

The DEC Burned line is the DEC sent to the @null account. All the transaction to @null are made from the @steemmonsters account and they are executing the burns from all the buys and sinks.

Some ups and down in the last period.

Let’s see then monthly chart.

Daily DEC burned in January 2020

Here is the chart for daily DEC burned in January 2020.

Quite a bumpy ride in January for DEC. We can see that at two time DEC burnt was actually bigger than DEC created, and at few times the daily DEC burnt went down even below 100k.

Monthly burns

Here are the burns summarized by month.

04.jpg

The first months, June and July have a significant amount of DEC burned and I guess those are months of stabilization. Starting from August things are stabilized around the 30M mark with very close numbers of DEC burned vs created. January has seen quite a low amount of DEC burned.

MonthBurnedCreated
May-19100,00012,000,000
Jun-1989,642,99429,848,000
Jul-1960,712,10030,544,000
Aug-1933,522,37230,240,000
Sep-1927,148,85828,012,000
Oct-1922,242,35029,651,000
Nov-1925,746,04328,575,000
Dec-1924,430,41129,081,000
Jan-2014,534,09028,777,000

As mentioned, January has low amount of DEC burnt. The introduction of the new reward system may have some effect on it, but that’s probably not the main thing. The reward system was change at the end of the month. The overall market situation is the main reason probably.

Maybe instead of burning players are using DEC to buy packs and cards :).

DEC Price

Here is the chart on DEC price in STEEM.

05.jpg

The price seems to hit a resistance and has dropped a bit in the last period. Although DEC is acting as a stable coin, and the option to buy packs for fixed amount of 2000 DEC is also in this direction.

All the best
@dalz

I was burning lots of DEC by putting it into upgrading my guild. Now I am HODLing some, but for the most part, using it to power up my current cards.

Thanks for sharing charts that show my what my "investment" (aka hobby that started as a game to share with my then 4 year old) has done. I have invested maybe $100 (high estimate - in packs and initial accounts), have cards worth over $500 USD, have earned lots and lots of DEC which I turned into STEEM, and am earning a (miniscule) income on peakmonsters.

Splinterlands has treated me well.

Better than blogging I think...

I'm pretty close accumulating as much DEC I can while it's undervalued, and since it's supposed to be a bit of a stablecoin, but with Untamed packs selling for so "cheap" on Steem-Engine it's hard to make up my mind where to spend my Steem especially when I don't care as much for the future airdrops that are being provided to those who buy the packs.

I'll be happy to buy second-hand packs and just wait for the value to go up and give up my chance to earn an air-dropped card happily.

Not sure what to say. Things are changing. Once DEC was up, now is a bit down. Card prices are also down. Buying packs can be interesting long term option.

@dalz it seems the burning of DEC also led to the increase in the price of steem this year...
