Splinterlands - The Gold Foils Worth the Money?
I been watching splinterlands markets lately, but just recently noticed that sometimes investing in a gold foil is cheaper than leveling up a regular version. Although present upfront cost maybe lower with gold foil down the road leveling up will likely make it more than regulars. My examples can change due to market prices fluctuating and sometimes new sellers post lower than average prices.
There had been some arbitrage between regular on gold but over time the differences have become rarer. I am sure large investors or players with big capital expense have snatch up most of these, but once in awhile there will still be opportunities. One just needs to wait patiently and keep tabs on new offers as they come in. The market is 24/7 so anyone can be selling at any time.
Lets get to some examples that I found in current market where gold foil is cheaper than a regular atpeakmonsters.com. (For those who are not aware peakmonsters now has a buy bulk feature to help in getting an estimate to how much it will cost to level up card with present cards on the market.)

Beta Version- Flesh Golem
Currently on market to get a regular level 4 Flesh Golem would require 12 bcx, so when buying singles it would cost $3.07.
While same level 4 card but gold version is $2.25!
It will take up to a level 8 Flesh Golem regular to be cheaper than a level 8 gold, but not by much...
Another Example Beta Version - Crustacean King
Note "8" cards meant when purchasing present cards one only needs to buy from 8 sellers to get to 12bcx. This can fluctuate daily depending on what is on market.
Not as much of a price difference, but never the less gold foil is less than the regular version at the same level.
Pros and Cons with Gold Foil Cards
Pros
- Takes less cards to level up
- Is more scarce therefore in the long run should become more valuable
- Get 10% DEC bonus for every win in battle
- Can be used in tournament events that allows gold foils
- Graphically appealing look to it compare to the regular version
Cons
- In general likely more expensive to level up than regular cardsConclusions
The next time you looking for a specific card look at the gold foil version too. May get lucky and find that it is cheaper with gold foil.

I have ignored gold foils in the beginning entirely. When DEC was introduced and started to give boni for GFs, I have begun to collect them as well.
