Splinterlands Sunday!: Changes Ahead!

The community continues to grow and players are continuing to be quite active in the ecosystem that continues to evolve. The growth continues to be felt as the number of new accounts I continue to battle in both ranked matches and tournaments increases every day. The days when being constantly marched by the same handful of players is definitely over although for whatever reason I often get matched with the same known bot accounts which continue to be challenging for me for whatever reason.

The growth continues to change the dynamics of the game and its ever changing economy. Dark Energy Crystals (DEC) continue to be a valuable resource despite the declines in price recently seen on the market. While some players are selling plenty DEC, others are using the price to acquire in game items like Potions and Booster Packs at attractive discounts as the developers continue to use a “pegged” price for the cost of these items. While I am not buying any in the open market, I am definitely trying to earn as much as I can to hold onto over the longer term.

DEC continues to be attractive with some of the changes we have seen. For example, having the ability to exchange the token for an Ethereum based ERC-20 demonstrates the flexibility and potential that the ecosystem continues to provide for the community. The amount being earned continues to decline given the increase in players being active in ranked play. I have never seen myself earning less than 50 DEC for a win before this season.

Additional changes will be interesting to see implemented as the growth has pushed developers to adjust the rewards. While cards have always been the traditional reward system for ranked play, soon a new loot box system will be deployed that will not limit the amount of Reward cards earned and start to include DEC, Potions, among other items in the growing economy. While feedback has been mixed from the community so far, I think it remains clear that cards are becoming more scarce and harder to earn in the future. This could be a way to accumulate value over time!

The latest Season has just ended this week and it was another weird one for me! The beginning of the Season seemed easier than usual as I was able to quickly ranked up into Champions Division very early in the Season. This was great as it provided a great way to get more of the soon more limited Reward cards. I even achieved the top Division with more than 3 days left in the Season. In addition, I was in the Top 50 for most of the Season and even got to be as high as 10th!

However, that was the peak of my performance for the Season as the Daily Quests were very difficult to complete towards the end of the Season. I saw my placement even go out of the Top 100 during the last day which made me not even consider trying for a spot in the Top 59 this time around. Instead, I focused on achieving my Daily Quest before Season end for extra cards as well as remaining in the top Division.

While it was tough to accomplish and my Energy Capture Rate for DEC was hit hard, I made it to my goals. It was well worth it as I got some great Reward Cards on that last Daily reward of the Season. I wish I can say the same for the Season Rewards but the reality is that they were very lackluster compared to what I have gotten in the past.

Another weird fact about the Season is that my Gold Foil only secondary account was also able to achieve a milestone for the first time! It was able to achieve Diamond for the first time. That account is mostly played by @gamercrypto so I was impressed and probably should consider letting him play my main account one Season. It was a great way to add some extra cards to the Collection! The Ups and Downs continue for me but in the end, it continues to be worth the effort!
