Don't be fooled by the title. This is definitely about the deserts!

We were invited to help celebrate the wedding anniversary of two close friends and after being personally recommended, they chose the Big Fish Restaurant at Siam@Siam Design Hotel in Pattaya. For me, at least three words in that last sentence raised red flags but it wasn't for me to choose and with the attending company it was sure to be a lovely evening spent with good friends.

The restaurant continued the theme of the hotel with its eclectic mix of industrial design combined with a smattering of shabby chic. The lighting was low and the music provided by a very competent keyboard player with a repertoire of laid back elevator music, interspersed with a slightly muted rock classic as his former musical ambitions seemed to erupt into frustration at his current status. It was audible, but not too loud.

The whole ambience was extremely chilled and laidback and the staff were attentive and polite without being overbearing which is always a huge plus for me and despite my misgivings, it wasn't pretentious in the slightest. The place was about half-full and the diners were simply quietly enjoying the food and the company.

We all ordered the buffet, with free flow drinks, beer, wine or soft drinks. I actually went for the wine with some hesitancy as cheap house wine is often dire but I was pleasantly suprised. It was an unknown Australian brand but very drinkable. I prefer red but don't worry, I'm not that much of a trogladyte that I was at a fish restaurant drinking red as opposed to white, I was happily suprised that there was also a great selection of meat available at the buffet too. Good thing, as I don't eat seafood!

I will spare the details of the incredible main course as this is about the desert, but it was simply awesome, fresh and tasty and cooked to order, but I had seen the desert section and was determined to save space to attack it with all the gusto I could muster.

Now as a Yorkshireman, sweets are what you suck on, desserts are just and pudding is what you eat after dinner but pushing aside my neanderthalic upbringing, I do recognise that this was a serious dessert menu.

Again in the form of a help-yourself buffet, the choice was excellent. Cakes and pastries, fresh fruits and cream, divine cheesecakes and there had to be a chocolate fountain of course, which Champagne (my 6 year-old partner in crime!) and I, returned to on numerous occasions , skewering almost everything in sight before coating it in rich, creamy warm chocolate.
I have to add at this point, that unlike previous encounters with these extremely 1990s throwbacks, the chocolate was actually really rather tasty. Good thing I had Champagne with me as an excuse!

For me, there was also something new. Freshly made rolled ice cream. A girl was making the ice cream before your very eyes by taking the ice cream mix and pouring it onto an ice cold metal sheet and with a scraper, rolling it and spreading it out until it became frozen ice cream whic was then served in a coiled up roll. I had the strawberry and which contain real chuck of fresh fruit. There were numerous other candy delights that I could have added but I went for simple! It was absolutely gorgeous.

The cost of the whole meal was a very reasonable 1099Baht (£27, $36) per head and well worth it for the dessert alone and there wasn't a Spotted Dick in sight!

I will leave you to salivate at a few more pictures!
