Tribes- A Steem-Engine vision for crypto based communities
Whenever Ned would talk about communities I would think it was a neat idea, but could never get a vision for how it would work. It never clicked and I never got past "oh, that seems neat." It was something about tags. I've been in sales for 10 years and the most important question to me is "Can you see how this would work?" I couldn't so I'd just shake my head and wait for something cool. I'm done waiting...
Experience is critical for design
I've helped manage the Minnow Support Project for 2 years. MSP is housed in the PALnet discord group which currently has about 20,000 accounts in it. The group has a bunch of mods, a bunch more constant chatters, and a lot of lurkers who like to know what's going on, but don't always interact. We also have an streaming internet broadcast station called mspwaves. We put on shows, we have meetings, we do forums, and we answer a ton of questions...
I think of this group as home. This is my digital family. This is my digital tribe where we can be digital nomads together.
Not only do I live here, but I also think I'm the most regular user of the blogging platform of all the witnesses (combined). I haven't bothered to check, but I'm pretty certain I have more posts than all the top 20 combined. It's gotta be pretty close. Sometimes when steemit and the witnesses aren't using our own blockchain socially it makes me wonder "how are these guys going to build the thing that really works for this place?" I'm in the trenches literally every day. I think I have a deeper understanding of the social aspect of this place than almost anyone here.
I'm taking that experience and focusing it through Steem-Engine and the Scot ecosystem to design a suite of products that unite people into their tribes and clans to make interacting easier and more rewarding than any other time in the history of the planet.
Critical Design Element: Keeping people together
I've said since nearly the beginning of this journey that people are the value. So, to me, keeping the community together is one of the most important aspects. I want to facilitate this and help all the different tribes stay connected. Right now steem doesn't feel very connected. You have some people blogging at steemit, instagramming at appics, streaming on vimm, chatting on discord, and posting video on dtube... Like I get that there's people all over the world doing this together, but it always feels like what Crimmy describes as "Singing your heart out to an empty auditorium."
When I interact on this blockchain, I don't necessarily have to interact with every single person in every single place around the world. But when I'm chilling in my community it should feel like I'm heard, know the people around me, and have multiple ways to communicate with them. I should feel connected. This should be my tribe and each user should feel engaged and feel like it's home.
Steem-Engine Tribes
Right now I'm working on getting a few more projects integrating Steem Engine tokens (Scot) into their websites. When I've figured out the starting family of partnerships I'll have the basis for what I'm calling Tribes.
A tribe in this case is a website. The base of the website is a blogging platform. There will be a link to a forum. A link to a live stream. A link to recorded videos. Communities have little special things they do, so we'll make sure you can customize links to non-blockchain places too. I'm going to try to get apps on phones working for the communities. There could be discord, telegram, wechat, or other chatting functions. As many of these tools as possible I'll work to make reward you with your tribe's Scot. Make a blog get your scot. Shoot a video get your Scot. Go on the forum and get your Scot. Chat in the discord and get your Scot. The whole ecosystem will support holding people together based on their common interests and a common financial system.
That website, which links all of these activities together by a single token that's meant for your community is what steem-engine will call your tribe. Your tribe is designed to keep your community together.... you know... like a tribe...
Thinking bigger
Once this baseline is done, which hopefully is in the 1-2 months timeframe I can start taking it outside our little world. I'm working on PALnet.io. I think it shows what a decentralized community space can look like. I'm working on splintertalk.io. I think it'll show what a business could do to create and reward their user base.
When the bare minimum design is put together I can pitch this to companies and communities all over the world.
- Reward interaction of your people.
- Keep them engaged.
- Democratize the conversation.
- Common financial interests.
Can you see how powering various tools with Scot and pooling them together can help you create and be a part of your community?
Can you feel at home in this tribe?
Can you gather your Steem fam into one of these?"
Hopefully you can see it. If the answer isn't yes today then gimme a few months (wink noise).

yes i am also voting for @aggroed for witness and @yabapmatt WOW Yaba is #1 must be from him creating Steem Keychain extension, which I think by default has people vote for him as witness maybe or guides them to vote for him as witness with a simple button? I mean thats how ATTIC LABS in ukraine got to be #4 EOS Block producer by giving out MyEOSWallet codes so many peopel used themn as a wallet....and the wallet made it easy to vote for them as BP.... justa guess as to how Yaba is #1 but he does deserve it for having made stembottracker steemkeychain oh yeah i forgot he made steembottracker hes been #1 for a while now ... i think witnesses like yaba and aggroed who have proven themselves should be given delegationa nd upvotes by @ned with @steem and @steemit as a privately funded worker proposal system , imean shit no nee dto change inflation if nedjust uses his upvotes and delegates millions of SP to aggroed and yaba for theior steem projects
It does have the option to vote for a witness but there is no default vote.
@yabapmatt and @aggroed are definitely deserving of their witness positions, I have nothing but respect for both of them and to be honest I don't know anyone who works harder than either of them do.

If I understood correctly this tribe thing is like steempeak tribe or busy tribe, but also can be like Slack for working groups or small like a whatsapp family group.

Sounds solid the introduction of a tribes will be nice to connect with like minded people. They will be smaller niches but much more will be able to get done and supported within them.

Excellent write up and the plan looks pretty awesome. In addition to rewarding the interactions another point that can be considered is "looking out for achievements". There is a platform called Kiip.me which is doing it. A similar idea but done right, better will be cool IMHO.
I'm extremely impressed with what has happened over the last few weeks. I really think this is a game-changer.
When I first saw steem-engine, I have to admit, I was underwhelmed. It was full of seemingly useless tokens. But after seeing the potential for token UTILITY and the ability to be rewarded for our efforts, I have a completely different perspective now.
It was the ALPHA and BETA tokens from splinterlands.io that opened my mind to the possibility. The ability to convert a valuable in-game item into a tradable asset really intrigued me. Then came DEC and ORB and so on. Then I realized I could purchase these in-game items on steem-engine.com! Then came SPT and PAL, tokens I could earn and stake.
This is the SMT's we've been waiting for... and soon enough we will see the communities forming, or as you say "tribes". I can think of three already with more coming soon!
This collaboration has really made the steem blockchain interesting again and I think Steem is about to skyrocket.

Excellent work here @aggroed yes you blog and keep us all up to date daily so much sometimes we forget you are a witness (and not in the witness protection program for blogging, lol). The tribe concept was what first came into my head when first hearing about SMT and the breakthroughs and eventual implementation of steem-engine. Breaking the macro economy of steem and the users on steemit into these little pieces can be a breakthrough, at least not being completely beholden to the enormous steem economy as a whole but in having micro currencies among your fellow 'tribe members.' Congratulations, we have begun to see the wisdom of wampum swapped by native american tribes over past several centuries to get what we want among those we wish exchange with, lol. Good stuff, keep the hits coming sir!

This is exactly along the lines of what I've been thinking as I've been trying to reward the awesome @freedomttribe and now @weedcash communties! This sounds cool. My only problems now are trying to hoard enough ENG and decide which services to use next!

This is why I respect you so much and am glad you are working here on Steem. I thought I had this quality of 'see a need, get to work on it,' because I'm maybe about 10% more likely to get to work on creative solutions than the average person. Then, Steem have me the chance to see @aggroed in action.
I can almost see it. I have an inkling given what feels like an explosion of activity since the introduction of Steem Engine, but I don't yet see myself and my business in it. I want to see it, because this whole idea resonates with me, but I don't yet see an application that works for the kind of community I serve, which is small and local (my martial arts dojo) even though we can and do need an online space.
Until then I'll just wait for something cool... (sheepish grin)
Nice ideals and project going on but some communities/tribes on steem blockchain has other tokens on Bitshares blockchain can there be a cross Chain for such tokens?

This is what I and a few others at the @naturalmedicine community have been talking about, brainstorming, and dreaming about (more or less) for a few months now... moreso since the whole steem-engine/SCOT thing has taken off.
The only problem is, none of us in that community are technically-minded or devs.
We don't know where to start, or how to start... but we know the know-how and the how-to exists out there.... (if only someone could explain it to us in metaphor, like planting a herb garden... LMAO).
So because this kinda thing is probably my bug-bear more than anyone else's.... where do we start?
How do we - as a community of non-technical people - create this?
We'd love some help, guidance, coaching.... anything really. We've got an idea for something to reach the wider world of natural health and healing.... and we know we can bring that world to Steem...

I've been trying to get back into supporting steem by engaging with its various tools and interfaces. A while back I didn't feel engaged and it felt like I was swimming around in a tide of information and posts for profit.
I heard about tribes after HF21 and this post and a few other articles have gotten me excited again.
Now that it's a few months later I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes.
