The Best Feet
“O'l boy!!! This new chemistry teacher is just too wicked in terms of how he teaches; I think we are being taught the opposite," I said.
“Hmm... I don't know how we can be able to pass well in his exam if he continues like this. He is not teaching us the right thing and to our satisfactions," Bola, my classmate, replied while hissing profusely.
“Mr. Mar, please, you don't need to leave us because we will suffer your absence," I opened up to Mr. Mar.
“I was supposed to still stay, but my staying is not reality. Anyway, I have no choice other than to leave at least someone better than me coming in to teach you chemistry," Mr. Mar replied.
Mr. Mar has been a good and nice man who loved us, his students, with all his heart. He had never, for once, treated us badly, nor did he teach us without understanding the concept properly.
Before his arrival at the school, we had been failing chemistry to the last level, but when he came in, everything changed for the better. He is the kind of teacher who loves even his immediate students more than himself. He can do anything just to make us students understand his method of teaching.
“Now that he has announced his exit, it will be difficult for us to get someone who will be like Mr. Mar and even better than him," I said to his colleagues.
“His announcement comes as a shock to us all. We should go find out what the problem is, or has he seen another option that is far better than this one?” Bola replied soberly.
After his announcement, all the teachers started preparing for his departure as they were trying to organize for his departure. We were organizing what to buy for him as a gift. Everyone, as well as teachers, loves him to the brim.
At the end of the term, he resigned for good. It was a sad one for us all. He was teaching, but life goes on.
When the new term began, we saw a new teacher who our principal introduced as our chemistry teacher. We were somehow happy that we had a new teacher, but then we would never forget Mr. Mar.
He entered with a bold face that looked unfamiliar to all of us. “We are in for it," I said.
“Indeed, we are in for it, as I can see that tough look on our new teacher's face," Bola replied.
“Good morning, students!” our class teacher said.
“Good morning, Sir," we all echoed.
“You have a new chemistry teacher after the departure of Mr. Mar. He is Mr. Ado," our class teacher said.
After some moments, he was provided the opportunity to say something to us in the form of advice.
“Good morning to you all. I'm your new chemistry teacher, and my name is Mr. Ado. I'm here to teach to your understanding and to make you feel comfortable in chemistry. Who's the class captain?” he reacted. I stood up and introduced myself to him as the class captain.
After the introduction, we all clapped our hands just to welcome him. He left for his office. When it was time for the chemistry class, he came to the class and started with a smile. We all rose and greeted him. Although his smile came as a surprise, it was different from the first day he came to the class.
He started the class and was flowing so well initially. We were so happy and were glad to have seen the best replacement for Mr. Mar. His class was lively, and it was so much better being the first day in the class. Most students had started comparing him with Mr. Mar and had started rating him better than Mr. Mar.
He came to our class the second day and was teaching a topic that Mr. Mar had discussed with us. As he was teaching, he was not smiling. The whole class adjusted and was so surprised by the sudden change in character.
“What would have been the problem for the man today?” I murmured to my colleague.
He taught us just as if he were afraid of the topic he was teaching. “How can he teach so badly like this?” I murmured as I asked myself.
The entire class was confused as he was teaching us the opposite of what the topic said.
“How come he is teaching us so differently from Mr. Mar? This is off-topic for God’s sake," I heard one of my classmates say.
The complete class was set into a state of confusion, and the class was so noisy just because of his way of teaching.
“Why the noise?” He asked.
No one borders on answering him; instead, we focus.
“Any questions?” He asked.
“Yes, sir,” I answered.
I went deeper into the topic and asked him just one question, which I knew the answer to. He began to beat about the bush without providing an answer. He began to talk from one point to the next, jumping out of point. The entire class knew the answer to the question, and we were all somehow surprised.
At a time, we thought the shoe was on the other leg, not knowing that we were wrong about everything.
We tried to complain to the principal, but then he turned us down. Days later, our principal was just passing by while Mr. Ado was in the class teaching. He did not know that the principal was standing by the window watching his flop. After some minutes, he left.
“We need to increase the salary of Mr. Mar and bring him back. The students are losing it all. They are being taught the opposite of what is supposed to be taught. I think Mr. Ado is not what we saw him to be. He had to be taken to the junior class to teach instead of ruining the lives of the senior science students," the principal said to other teachers in a brief meeting, which excluded Mr. Ado.
Two weeks later, the principal invited Mr. Mar and increased his salary. He accepted after hearing the story of the students he left behind.
We were so happy he came back. “Mr Mar!!! We thought Mr. Ado was the shoe in the other leg, not knowing he was nowhere to match your method of teaching," I said on behalf of the class, and we all laughed.

I was quite curious about Mr. Ado's problem—I mean, he seemed distracted, but that doesn't give them the right to harshly criticize his way of teaching. It's just his second day, and maybe something came up that's why he acted that way. I think the senior science students's view of their new teacher was quite clouded because they'd expected him to be like or even better than their previous teacher. They should have asked him what's wrong with him on that day he looked distracted, but I guess they really wanted Mr. Mar back.
As a future teacher, I can't imagine how I would feel if my students didn't want me as their teacher. I somehow felt bad about what happened to Mr. Ado, but maybe he's not really meant for teaching older students.
Seriously, teaching may not be for everyone. It is a duty for those who have interest in it. However, in my view, I think the learners were were too quick in disapproving Mr Ado teaching prowess. He probably must just be settling down and over time, the learners may come to terms with his methodology.
Keep up the good work. 👏🎵
