The Competition For Tower Defense Games Is On
I recently had the chance to try out the new tower defense game from Pancakeswap - Pancake Protectors - and I have to say, it is FANTASTIC.
Now to preface, I had no idea PCS was even working on a game so this came out as a very pleasant surprise. I use PCS regularly as a DEX on the BNB chain and want to see the project succeed in the defi space. The gameplay is addictive, the graphics/art are sharp, the music is on point, and most importantly it is free to play.
The game is not trying to be more than it is and I do think the wide appeal will bring many Web3 gamers to at least check it out. I know there are already a few in my YouTube community who want to jump and get more involved with the guild system and start leveling up.
So ultimately this brings me to Soulkeep, the upcoming tower defense game from @splinterlands. I have a good amount of packs (enough for beta access) and have been looking forward to the game since it was announced last fall. The beta is good but the auto battler component of the game may be a limiting factor if competitors in the space offer a more robust and dynamic form of gameplay. Unfortunately I don't see that changing or evolving for Splinterlands or Double Coconut (the partner studio developing the game) at any point in the near future.
Where I believe Soulkeep will have a competitive advantage will be through tokenomics, although it is no secret that the Splinterlands ecosystem is a mess right now with many tokens hitting all time lows. That being said, the fact that Soulkeep will share the ecosystem with both the original card game as well as the upcoming land expansion means it will not have to shoulder the entire load and can plug into an already successful game economy and community. The game won't be free to play but we don't know enough to comment on how large a barrier of entry that will be compared to something like Pancake Protector which is free to play.
So in the middle of this brutal bear market, the arms race to build awesome games and game economies is still going very strong. The Splinterlands and Double Coconut teams have their work cut out for them and I have no doubt Pancake Protector will be the last competitor to enter the ring.
May the best game win!
