Lots of "accidents" lead to discoveries, I guess, like penicillin. But one has to be a good observant scientist, listening for the knock on the door, to catch it when it comes.

Precisely! Most of the accidental discoveries contributed immensely to the field of science. As you already said Penicillin, likewise; pacemaker, teflon, microwave oven, rubber and so on. This is the beauty of science. You can’t be at a loss if you still make a mistake, your work will get recognised by science itself.
