Marlai Singariel and the Power of Magic Attack — Close Range Ruleset

Understanding the rulesets is extremely important to win any battle. In fact, I would say that 50% of your chances of victory depend on understanding the rulesets properly while the other 50% depend on your monster selection and positioning.
Some rulesets are highly technical and confusing but if you understand them correctly, it becomes much easier to choose the right monsters and enter the battle with a proper team combination.
In today’s 38 mana battle I encountered a very interesting ruleset. However due to a lack of suitable monsters and some mistakes on my part I ended up losing the battle. I selected one Archon along with four monsters while my opponent chose one Archon with five monsters.
CLOSE RANGE
The ruleset was based on Close Range, meaning that all ranged attack monsters could only attack effectively from the first position. If a ranged monster was placed anywhere other than the front position it would not hit the enemy units and would deal no damage at all.
Therefore it became clear that ranged attackers should be placed in the front so they can continue attacking every round. It should be placed in the very frontline only and avoid placing it on other positions.

When dealing with this ruleset there are two important things to consider. First if you have a strong ranged attack tank with good armor and health, placing it on the front line can be very effective because it can absorb damage while continuing to attack every round.
On the other hand if you do not have a durable ranged attacker it may be better to avoid using ranged monsters altogether.
The second important point concerns the Archon selection. In this battle, the available Archon provided a magic ability bonus. My biggest mistake was that I did not fully understand how to take advantage of it . I must had selected magic monsters.
After selecting the magic Archon, all friendly magic attack units would receive +1 Magic Attack. For example if one of your allied monsters normally had 1 Magic Attack, it would attack with 2 Magic Damage instead.

My mistake was that although I correctly selected a strong ranged attack tank for the first position, I filled the remaining positions mostly with melee attackers. My opponent, however, used a melee monster in the front and filled the rest of the lineup with magic attackers.
As a result the opponent dealt significantly more damage every round because all of those magic units benefited from the Archon’s bonus while my team was only making two attacks per round, which was far from enough.
Since our Archon granted a magic bonus the player with more magic attackers naturally gained a much greater advantage. Every magic unit kept attacking with an additional +1 Magic Attack each round, increasing the overall damage output considerably.
In this strategy it is also possible to make effective use of melee attackers if they possess abilities like Sneak or Opportunity. Such monsters can be placed in the second position and still continue dealing damage to enemy units.

However if you place ordinary melee attackers in the third or fourth position they will not attack at all and will simply serve as an idle defensive line. Therefore it is much better to position Sneak or Opportunity monsters in the second slot so they can consistently deal damage throughout the battle.
This is why it is essential to understand the rulesets properly and arrange your team accordingly. Although today’s battle resulted in a defeat for me but I learned a great deal from the experience, especially about how to survive and build an effective strategy under this particular ruleset.
What will be your stance in such battles? What will be your strategy considering this ruleset? Will be glad to see your answers in the comment section.
