Today In History: 04 October 2024
Hello all Hivians and good people of the Gems community. Most of us may not be aware of some major happenings or events around the globe that took place on this day many years ago. I will therefore take us round the globe in a giffey to have a look at some of those historical events that took place on this day, friday the 04/10/2024 in history.
We begin today from the Soviet Union. Do you know that on this day in 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, which orbited Earth until 1958, ushering in the space age and heightening Cold War tensions between the USSR and the United States.
From the Soviet Union, we move over to Haiti. Do you also know that on this day in 2014, Haitian politician Jean-Claude Duvalier ("Baby Doc"), who was Haiti's president from 1971 to 1986, died in Port-au-Prince while on trial for alleged human rights violations.
From Haiti, we move over to Somalia. Now, on this day in 1993, the so-called Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia came to an end with the deaths of 18 US soldiers and hundreds of Somalis; the battle happened during a US-led military operation that was part of a larger multinational humanitarian and peacekeeping effort in the war-torn African country.
From Somalia, we move over to the world of calendars. Do you know that on this day in 1582, The Gregorian calendar was introduced, and many countries embraced it over the years.
Gentlemen, we'll round off our today's look in history from the world of religion. Do you know that on this day in 1535, the first complete English Bible was published in Zürich, Switzerland, or Cologne, Germany, thanks to the efforts of Miles Coverdale.
My good people, that will be all from me today. Let's do it again tomorrow.
