Are bots a problem? - A Diary Of A Splinterlands Player #037

Bots, Bots, Bots

I usually don't mind playing against bots, but this time, I played so many of them in just a few minutes - all of the same name. And from the names of the other players I played in between this "bot farm", I would guess, that they're bots as well.
But in this occasion it felt a little weird. I was playing against five bots of the same name almost in direct sequence.

In this case, it was helpful, since I won most of my battles against them.

And some others:

So do you think bots are a problem? I am not decided regaring this matter. On the one hand, they are probably needed to keep the ecosystem alive. Especially in times, when rewards are low and not too many players active, bots are essential to be able to do ranked battles. Without bots, it would be difficult to find battles all the time and it could hurt the gaming experience.
Also some human has put time, money and other ressources into the process of creating a bot. Or in the above cases, probably hundreds of bots. Those people would be also hurt a lot, if botting was prohibited or restricted.

On the other hand, bots are also a problem. They eat up a lot of the rewards. It is probably unclear how many bots are in the game, but especially in the lower leagues it feels often that there are more bots than human players.
If you loose a lot against bots, it is also frustrating. This time I have had a 7-6 against the bots I choose to show (probably similar with other bots). But there are times, when it feels like I am loosing a lot more against bots - and other people do as well. Bots are most likely also the reason, why we do not have DEC rewards in Bronze 2 and lower and why the rewards in Bronze are in total really bad. Especially in times, when DEC is valued more, this can really make a big difference.

But even right now, with DEC at a very low, it is still 5x to credits. And you do not get any rewards for winning battles in Bronze 3 or novice.

To be honest, I do not have a good solution to the problem. Banning bots wouldn't really be the best solution. And why only ban bots, and still allow multi-accounting? Yes, it is a difference, if you do have to play each account by yourself, but you could still profit and exploit the system with more accounts. The change to the rewards, did bring a solution to the problem, and it is more rewarding to play in higher leagues, as it was before. Therefore it could be more rewarding to invest in one account instead of many accounts.
But still, it seems like it is financially speaking better to have more low-level accounts, than one high level account.

I got this fellow more often, since it isn't valued as it was before Chaos Legion. I still like this card.

I noticed the same. Played several bots in a row. Some of them didn't work properly and the bot didn't pick any cards. That was a bit annoying.

Though an easy win ;)

Yes, but it doesn't count towards the quests if the bot has no cards and the fight gets canceled. It's a win but not for the quest.

depends on the quest, i've had the ones for specific splinters count, but not sneak/snipe quests

Well, not if you are not able to finish your card picking. It didn't count towards the quest but counted as a win in general.

In the "bad old days" (= half a year ago), you often had to wait a minute or more to find a match in bronze league. Without the bots, it would have been worse. That was their one redeeming factor.

Yeah, that was what I heard as well. I started in the end of September, so I do not know the world before the bots, but this does make sense.
