Modern or Wild? Which Format You Should Choose
Among the first decisions that a new Splinterlands player has to face is the one regarding which format to play in.
In fact, the game provides two different formats, which are distinguished by some key differences: the Modern format and the Wild format.
So let's see how they differ and why one should choose one or the other.
The Modern Format
The first thing to know about the Modern format is that it is, fundamentally, the format designed for new players who, since they are new to the game, have fewer cards at their disposal and still know little about the game mechanics.
To meet their needs, the Modern format allows the use of only some of the sets released so far: specifically, in the Modern format only cards from the two most recently released sets can be used, as well as the related mini-expansions, Gladius cards, and Rewards and Promo cards released at the same time as the two most recent sets.
Currently, this means that in the Modern format it's possible to deploy cards from the Chaos Legion, Riftwatcher (which is a mini-set), and Rebellion sets, in addition to Gladius, Rewards, and Promo cards, with the limitations stated above.
The Wild Format
In the Wild format, on the other hand, there are no limits to the cards that can be played: every card that exists and has been released to date can be deployed and, therefore, there are many, many more combinations of cards which are possible and which you need to know in order to compete at your best.
This is the format for the longest-standing players with the largest collections.
Is Everything So Simple or Is There More?
The truth is, however, that things are not so simple.
In fact, at present, the two formats are characterized by two other important and crucial differences:
- the ban of bots and battle helpers
- the SPS obtained with every single victory.
Only in the Modern format bots/battle helpers are banned, and only there, therefore, you can be sure (more or less) that you are playing against other real players, who use their knowledge of the game to build their team and engage us in battle.
This means that matchmaking is a bit slower, but also that each victory it is much more satisfying: at the same time, however, it also means a higher average level of challenge, which at times makes the Modern format very punishing for beginners, and not only them.
The fewer players in the Modern format than in the Wild format also leads to an imbalance in the rewards in SPS that can be obtained with each victory.
Since the SPS pool is the same for the two formats, in the Modern format the rewards, due to the smaller number of players, are much higher, making each victory much more rewarding.
Rewards can be up to 6 times higher, creating a big incentive to choose this format over the other, but raising the level of competitiveness of the Modern format even higher.
Which Should You Choose Therefore?
There's no a straight answer: based on what I've written so far, the Modern format should be the obvious choice for any new player, considering the smaller number of playable cards, the absence of boring bots, and the higher number of rewards.
However, should the Modern format prove to be too difficult and competitive, the Wild format might, somewhat ironically, prove to be a much easier battleground to take your first steps in the game: true, there are major disadvantages in playing in this format as a new player, but at least the level of opponents is much lower, and that is no small deal if all you want is to finally be able to win a few games or move on to the next league.

Modern o Wild? Quale Formato Scegliere
Una delle prime decisioni che un nuovo giocatore di Splinterlands si trova a dover affrontare è quella relativa al formato in cui giocare.
Il gioco mette a disposizione infatti due diversi formati, contraddistinti da alcune fondamentali differenze: il formato Modern e quello Wild.
Vediamo quindi in cosa differiscono e perchè uno dovrebbe scegliere l'uno o l'altro.
Il Formato Modern
La prima cosa da sapere sul formato Modern è che questo, di base, è il formato pensato per i nuovi giocatori che, essendo appena arrivati sul gioco, hanno a disposizione meno carte e conoscono ancora poco le meccaniche di gioco.
Per venire loro incontro, il formato Modern consente infatti l'utilizzo solo di alcuni dei set usciti sino ad oggi: in particolare, nel formato Modern è possibile utilizzare solamente carte dei due ultimi set usciti, oltre alle relative mini-espansioni, le carte Gladius e le carte Rewards e Promo uscite in concomitanza con i due ultimi set.
Attualmente ciò significa che nel formato Modern è possibile schierare carte dei set Chaos Legion, Riftwatcher (che è un mini-set) e Rebellion, oltre alle carte Gladius, Rewards e Promo, con i limiti sopra indicati.
Il Formato Wild
Nel formato Wild, invece, non esistono limiti alle carte giocabili: ogni carta esistente ed uscita sino ad oggi può essere schierata e, perciò, sono molte, molte, molte di più le combinazioni di carte possibile e che bisogna conoscere per poter competere al meglio.
Questo è il formato per i giocatori di più lunga data e con le collezioni più grandi.
E' Tutto Così Semplice o C'è di Più?
La verità è che, tuttavia, le cose non sono così semplici.
Allo stato attuale, infatti, i due formati sono caratterizzati da altre due importanti e fondamentali differenze:
- il ban dei bot e battle helpers
- gli SPS ottenuti ad ogni singola vittoria
Solo nel formato Modern i bot/battle helpers sono bannati e solo lì, quindi, si ha la certezza (più o meno) di star giocando contro altri giocatori in carne ed ossa, che utilizzano le proprie conoscenze del gioco per formare il proprio team ed affrontarci in battaglia.
Questo significa che il matchmaking è un po' più lento, ma anche che con ogni vittoria è molto più soddisfacente: al contempo però significa anche un livello di sfida di media più alto, che a tratti rende il formato Modern molto punitivo per i principianti, ma non solo.
La minor presenza di giocatori nel formato Modern rispetto al formato Wild determina inoltre uno squilibrio nelle ricompense in SPS che è possibile ottenere con ogni vittoria.
Siccome il pool di SPS è lo stesso per i due formati, in quello Modern le ricompense, stante il minor numero di giocatore, sono molto più alte, rendendo ogni vittoria molto più proficua.
Le ricompense possono arrivare ad essere 6 volte maggiori, creando un grosso incentivo a scegliere questo formato invece dell'altro, ma innalzando ancora di più il livello di competitività del formato Modern.
Quale Conviene Scegliere Perciò?
Non c'è una risposta univoca: sulla base di quanto sin qui scritto, il formato Modern dovrebbe essere la ** scelta scontata** per ogni nuovo giocatore, visto il numero minore di carte giocabili, l'assenza di noiosi bot ed il numero di ricompense maggiori.
Tuttavia, se il formato Modern dovesse rivelarsi troppo difficoltoso e competitivo, il formato Wild potrebbe, un po' paradossalmente, rivelarsi un terreno di battaglia molto più facile da affrontare per muovere i primi passi nel gioco: è vero, ci sono dei grossi svantaggi a giocare in questo formato come nuovo giocatore, ma almeno il livello degli avversari è molto più basso, e questo non è poco se tutto quello che si vuole è riuscire finalmente a vincere qualche partita o passare alla Lega successiva.
In ogni caso, se cercate consigli o strategie di gioco, un buon consiglio è sempre quello di entrare nel server Discord ufficiale di Splinterlands ed iscriversi alla Community di Splinterlands su Hive, in modo da poter ricevere suggerimenti anche da altri giocatori e consigli su come migliorare!
