Helpful Tips for Beginners

avatar

I started playing Splinterlands November 2021 so I am by no means an expert. However, I've quickly become familiar with the game and wanted to share a few tips to help others from making the same mistakes that I made.

Tip #1 : Minimum Investment

Invest a minimum of $40 in the game. You can invest more or less but in my opinion, $40 will make your life so much easier. Trying to grind through with just the Summoners Spellbook is doable, but you will grow your deck (and thus your investment) much quicker if you're able to invest a bit more in the game.

I would recommend splitting the $40 as follows:

$10 - Summoner's Spellbook (required)
$10 - DEC (currently $0.003/DEC which buys you 3333 DEC)
$10 - Stake SPS (currently $0.124/SPS which buys you 81 SPS)
$10 - Chaos Legion Packs (currently $3/pack on Tribaldex which buys you 3 packs)

With your money split up this way, daily airdrops and staking rewards will net you roughly 0.5 SPS per day which can be swapped for about 20 DEC/day.

You can then use the DEC to easily rent up to Bronze I (5000 CP). With this method, every DEC earned from battles and rewards from the daily and end of season chests are all profit!

Take a look at the tools on Splintercards.com and play with them a bit to find a ratio that works best for you.

Tip #2 : Use PeakMonsters to Rent

PeakMonsters.com has an excellent automatic renting tool that will help you get the most Power/DEC out of your rentals.

By using the Power Rental Tool, PeakMonsters will automatically find and rent those cards out to you. Keep in mind that each card will be rented out in 2 day increments and you can renew it manually for as many days as you would like.

I would highly recommend using this tool at the beginning of the season to find great deals on card rentals.

Tip #3 : What Cards Should I Rent?

At the beginning of the new season, I usually try to get to Silver III as quickly as possible. This is incredibly difficult with just the Starter Deck so here are a few cards that I recommend renting to help you score some win streaks.

Mylor Crowling - 2.8 DEC/day
image.png

Mylor Crowling is an Earth Summoner that gives everyone on your team Thorns. This will deal damage back at any melee attackers with a cap of 2 damage! This is an extremely powerful card, especially in rulesets that encourage the use of melee monsters.

Furious Chicken - 2 DEC/day

Although it does not provide any attack or other abilities, the Furious Chicken is an essential card in many low to mid level battles. It costs 0 mana and is basically used to absorb one of your opponents attacks. If you have the room, it's a free spot and can be used to protect your backline, frontline, or absorb an opportunity or snipe attack.

Creeping Ooze - 0.1 DEC/day

Creeping Ooze is another very cheap card to rent that will slow down all of your enemies by 1 speed. That 1 speed can be all it takes to give you the edge over your opponent by allowing you to attack first and giving you a better chance of dodging their attacks. Like the Furious Chicken, it's a low mana card best used in low to mid level battles.

Wood Nymph - 0.1 DEC/day

Wood Nymph is a favorite of mine because it heals your tank, just like the Goblin Psychic. Using the Wood Nymph alongside the Goblin Psychic to give a double heal to your Unicorn Mustang makes it incredibly difficult to defeat.

Conclusion

I hope these tips will help get you started. When I started a few short months ago, I was completely overwhelmed with everything the game had to offer. I plan to write some more short guides that will help out the other beginners. These guides will include battle strategies, more cards to rent, cards to buy, and more. Let me know in the comments if there's something in particular that you would like to learn more about. Thanks!
