This week's battle challenge features the Magi of Chaos. It is a Neutral, Magic monster that can provide some nice Magic damage in any lineup!

Magi of Chaos Highlights

Although it is light on abilities, the Magi of Chaos shines due its decent set of stats and the fact that it is a Neutral card.

At low levels such as Bronze and Novice, it isn't an exciting card but it is good due to the 2 Magic damage it can deal.

In Silver, you get 1 extra damage. Gold will give you the Oppress ability which can do quite a bit of damage to those pesky "no-attack tanks" such as Riftwing.

So when do I use the Magi of Chaos?

• Since this is a Neutral card, it can be used in nearly any lineup if you need a bit of Magic damage with some tanking ability
• Pairing this with Obsidian is always a good choice
• Strategically speaking, there isn't much else to work with here since the abilities aren't there

This Week's Featured Battle

In this week's featured battle, we have Obsidian versus Thaddius Brood in a Back to Basics, Even Stevens battle!

Battle Ruleset

	Back to Basics	Monsters lose all abilities
	Even Stevens	Only Monsters with even Mana costs may be used in battles
	16 Mana	This is considered a low mana battle
	Active Splinters	All splinters are available

• Back to Basics
  • Bring out the Magic attackers!
  • With no abilities available (except for what is provided by Summoners) Magic damage is typically the first choice in these battles
  • A ranged based play can work as well, especially since Chaos Legion Magic with Obsidian is generally slower without much health or armor
• Even Stevens
  • No real strategy here other than be aware of what cards are and aren't available
  • For example, without Regal Peryton, Obsidian plays will be SLOW
• 16 Mana
  • This is a low Mana battle so expect to see a sparse lineup
  • Generally this means you see a lot of low health monsters so make sure you're quicker!

The major ruleset here is Back to Basics. Since all monsters lose abilities, Magic is the only one who can attack from the frontline as well as the backline (unless your summoner says otherwise).

My priorities are to first think of a Magic lineup with Obsidian. Then think of counters to it such as Thaddius Brood or Grandmaster Rathe. To some extent, maybe even Sthispa.

Then I like to consider Ranged based plays, typically with General Sloan.

Due to the low mana and Even Stevens rule, I decided that nerfing Magic with Thaddius Brood gave me the best chance of winning. Obsidian would be okay except you won't really have much speed which is extremely important in these low mana matches where a lot of monsters may only get 1-shot off.

General Sloan and a ranged play are thrown out because of the low mana. You need some good tanks in order for that to work and it will be tough with only 16 mana to play with.

Let's Battle!

• My opponent went with the slower Obsidian play which worked out great for me
• Not only was I able to debuff their magic damage, the reduced health allowed me to kill their monsters with 1 or 2 hits
• Having the speed advantage was great because I was able to kill their largest threat (Magi of Chaos) before it got a chance at a 2nd attack

Did it work?

Yes! I was able to take the win easily due to the magic and health debuffs.

I analyzed the battle with Splintertools and was given a 100% chance of winning the battle. That is always great to see!

Final Thoughts

The Magi of Chaos is a great card to have. You can almost always make a case for it in your lineup, especially when Magic damage is a must. At $1.70/BCX, its usefulness and popularity are reflected in the price. It's a bit steep but a must have card if you plan to play at high levels!
