Splinterlands Battle Mage Challenge - Equal Opportunity

Hey!

Welcome to another Battle Mage Challenge… this week we have the “Equal Opportunity” rule, which grants the Opportunity ability to every Monster in the battlefield.

Equal Opportunity

This is another fun rule to play with, like Equalizer or Born Again, especially with a high Mana cap, since it allows you to place insane Monsters in any position, except for Ranged attackers of course. Cards with Opportunity attack the Monster with the lowest Health in the enemy team.

I think is important to know what not to do in this rule, talking about defense… since the first Monsters to be attacked is going to be the ones with lowest Health, you definitely don’t want to position cards with very low Health, even if they are very useful somehow.

Cards like the Spirit Hoarder or the Clockwork Aide are very useful, however they won’t survive the first round, unless you use Monsters with Taunt, to draw attention away from these kinds of cards. You can also use weak cards with Camouflage.

Of course, there is a big exception in the form of Martyrs… you can position Martyrs strategically to boost the stats of your desired Monsters… and thinking about offense, the Monsters that benefit the most in this ruleset are the ones with mixed attacks and/or the Double Strike ability.

In the following battle you can appreciate these last advices… it’s even better, because there is an example, thanks to my opponent, on how you can exploit Resurrection and Martyr with this rule, and from my side you can see that a Monster with Forcefield and Taunt can be quite valuable in this ruleset, since players tend to use a lot of power when this rule is in effect.

Lineup & Analysis

This battle was done in the Modern Format. All Splinters allowed, very short Mana cap. Because of the short Mana cap, I decided to use this new trick that uses the “Weapons Training” ability, which grants an attack to cards with no attack.

Lineup1.png

  • The key card for this battle uses Magic, so as a Summoner I picked Obsidian, who increases Magic by one point.
  • As a false tank, the Fungus Fiend, a free Mana card.
  • Next, the Lurking Puffer, the first beneficiary of the Weapons Training. It’s a nice card to use, because is cheap and has a decent deal of Health.
  • Then the key card, the Moxian Rebel, which trains the adjacent units to use Magic attacks.
  • In fourth position, the Chaos Agent, who also gets to use Magic.
  • At last, Djinn Biljka, very valuable at level two, since it gets one extra point of attack plus Void. It’s also a great card for this rule, because of its Camouflage.

It was a successful battle, especially because my opponent didn’t seem to be experienced. The introduction of Weapons Training turned the table and now you have to be wary if you plan on using just one card to win a battle. I don’t say there are no cards like that, but his election was definitely bad, so it was an easy victory. In this case I was able to develop much more firepower.

Lineup & Analysis

Battle from the Wild Format. Plenty of Mana to use, but only five Monsters could be used… I think this is a new rule… and Earthquake. Here I my focus was on avoiding the negative effects of the Earthquake and the Death Splinter has many interesting cards for that.

Lineup2.png

  • I picked Thaddius Brood as my Summoner. I preferred him over Octavia Shadowmeld here, because of his Magic debuff.
  • As a tank Skok Duskblight. Unorthodox tank, but I wanted to Weapon Train either the Riftwing or the Will-o-Wisp, which can fly.
  • Next, I picked the Riftwing over the Wisp, because its Scavenger skill makes him more durable.
  • Then, the Venari Marksrat, as a Martyr.
  • Next, a great Legendary from the Soulbound Reward set, Usut. Sometimes I forget he can fly, but this time I remembered; besides he has plenty of hit points and the Bloodlust effect, which makes him great in rulesets where the field is aggressive.
  • At last, an interesting Rare Monster from the Rebellion Edition, the Helheim Demon, who can also fly and it has Taunt, so I was able to draw attention away from weaker Monsters.

Every time I see Quora on the opposing team, I hold my breath, since the incidence on victories that card has is incredible. However, I was victorious and I would say it was because:

  • Quora was penalized by the Earthquake at the end of each round.
  • I focused on using Flying cards.
  • Both the Helheim Demon and Usut have Armor, which prevents Quora from mixing both her Magic and Melee attack to hit Health points.
  • I was lucky that Usut was able to finish three of the enemy Monsters, feeding his Bloodlust.
  • The Riftwing was also well fed by the fallen units.

Thanks to all these factors, my power and health were high enough to withstand and kill Quora.
