People in SL Discord Wants Free Speech

Freedom of Speech

Damn! That is deep to begin with! A concept or statement where there is no consensus. I went to the source in the United States, the entity which supposed to define and protect the very thing:

https://www.uscourts.gov/about-federal-courts/educational-resources/about-educational-outreach/activity-resources/what-does

Unfortunately as per their own statement they have 'struggled'. No wonder we struggle too!

During my time at this blockchain, this phrase is perhaps the most misused thing that I have seen thrown around (well other than reward pool abuse and farming of course!). This is particularly relevent in the crypto space. As most crypto people, at least the founders of the movement, initiated this as a revolution against conventional monetary governance by elected officials and their representatives. So when people arrive in this space, they assume some sort of 'freedom'. I am unsure what exactly, and I have talked to quite a few and they haven't been able to provide a clear answer either. So what is boils down to in most cases, a bunch of disgruntled people who are unhapply at whatever that is, comes and gathers a discord server or Twitter/X or at a blog, and shouts FREEDOM like Mel Gibson!! Yeah, I have seen grown man do that :)

What it is NOT

The same space list a few examples, which is just that, examples and not limited to, of what is NOT Freedom of Speech.

As you can see you can't just say anything and get away with. As per American Library Association

The categories of unprotected speech include obscenity, child pornography, defamatory speech, false advertising, true threats, and fighting words. Deciding what is and is not protected speech is reserved to courts of law.

https://www.ala.org/advocacy/intfreedom/censorship#:~:text=The%20categories%20of%20unprotected%20speech,prevents%20government%20restrictions%20on%20speech

In my simple mind, and I am no student of law, I can't say things that is defamatory to someone, and also I can't incite violence. That doesn't mean it is not done. One of the former President of the United States is currently in multiple active court cases where he is charged for violating this particular law.

How is this related to Splinterlands

Splinterlands has a discord server, where certain people sometimes acts beyond what should be done in public. Now, some of it, we consider a safe space and do not mind at all. However, very recently someone questioned the effectiveness, efficiency, and every time management of an employee of Splinterlands, which is a private company. The individual, the community member did something that is not within his rights and should be discouraged. It was handled, but perhaps not swiftly enough.

The effect is long standing and not good for the community. This game I personally consider my home, and I will protect it against all odds. So when this happens I take this personally, and I know many do it the same way. In the next few weeks/months we will investigate how this type of situation can be avoided so that this doesn't happen again.

Here in Chicago they will graduate you from high school even though you can't even read or do basic math.

Texas really seems to be booming. Glad to hear they have good schooling there. I've only ever lived in El Paso was a bit rough in schooling when I was there lol.

Some people want and advocate freedom, but not when the freedom of others encroaches upon their own freedom/agenda/needs etc. In those cases they feel that others shouldn't have freedom and rebel against those others who actively deploy their own freedom. It's the same old story.

I hope you're well mate...watching the cricket?

Not only people don't understand freedom but they also don't understand the cost for it and the privilege.

Yes watching cricket. Did watch all India games and earlier today Australia vs Pakistan. Warner did well :)

Yep, freedom doesn't come for free.

I watched the Aus/Pak game and agree. I've not seen as much as I would normally but I've heard the standard has been high, as you'd expect at WC level I guess.

Freedom of speech also doesn't apply to private companies, at least in America, which most people tend to get angry about when they run up against it. The government cannot restrict one's speech; a private company can. Being banned from Twitter, for example, is not a violation of free speech. Perhaps it should be, but that is a different argument.

But it's understandable that no one knows these things. They stopped teaching civics class in the 70s (on purpose, if you go for conspiracy theories), so few learn much about the details of these things.

Freedom of speech is needed but it is a pity that most people are not opportune to express or exercise their freedom of speech
It is quite sad

Thank you for taking this hard stance, even in the face of doubt and abuse. I will continue to go to bat for you and defend you whenever and wherever I can because I believe in your words AND your actions to be int he best interest for the Splinterlands community.

While I have been intentionally absent from Mav chat for the majority of 2023, I still poke my nose in from time to time, but nowhere like I was during my first year in Splinterlands. I'm sorry I missed this most recent bit of unrest over the Clayboyn proposal. Everything I've read/heard has been second-hand, and typically from people who are not on #TeamAzircon.

I wish things weren't always so divisive to the point of name-calling and 1st amendment abuses. But hopefully the new heavy-handed moderation in MAv chat will end up being for the good of the game. Ultimately, that is what we all want anyways!

Freedom begins to be important precisely the moment you lose it, because before that happens, it most likely will not have been given the place it deserves.

It is when they limit you, and you lose your privileges that people really begin to give freedom the place that it deserves.

I heard something that happened with that SL employee, I don't know exactly what happened, but I really trust your good judgment to defend and maintain order Azircon.

=)
