Evaluating the ROI in Ranked of Immortalis

This is the 4th post in my regular series where I implement the method I recently posted to evaluate the ROI of a single card in Ranked (here). I have a number of cards I want to test using this approach, and want to share my results with the community.

As a reminder, the method is to rent a card for 48 hours and see how often that card is used in a winning team (where each win is worth ~$0.27) and determine a card's APY based on that. To be worth it, a card needs to beat the ROI I could get in other methods, such as renting the card out, or putting the money is a Liquidity Pool.

That said, I did this one a little differently; I already own Immortalis and wanted to see if my purchasing it based on anecdotal data was backed up by my method. So instead of renting it for 48 hours, I ++turned it off++ for 48 hours then saw how it did in the following 48. This simulated not having it prior to "renting" it for 48 hours.

The Card

Today, the card I'm evaluating is Immortalis, one of the legendary summoners from Chaos Legion. Based on price, he is generally considered one of the stronger CL legendary summoners. Moreso than any of the other, in certain rulesets if you don't have him, you pretty much auto-lose to someone who does. Seeing this happen enough times made me purchase Immortalis a few weeks ago, and I've seen how well he has performed in the interim. But for the sake of data-driven decisions, I still wanted to see how he fared in the objective calculation.

How did it do?

I "rented" Immortalis at level 4 on January 6 for 48 hours, during which my bot played 96 battles. Immortalis was used 6 times, but only won 2 of the matches it was in.

Based on this, the APY of Immortalis would be 42%, right around the return necessary for me to purchase the card. Moreover, it was ++used++ in more fights than any of the other summoners I've tested thus far - Immortalis has a very strong niche that ArchMage does not hesitate to exploit.

Conclusions

I already had a pretty strong reason to believe Immortalis was a strong card - I had noticed myself losing to it more than any other CL summoner prior to buying it, and noticed a lot of wins with it after I bought it. I'll admit I was disappointed in the number of wins during the trial period, but I was happy at the usage rate. I'm hoping that the number of losses was due to some bad luck, but this is something I might reevaluate in the future. For now, Immortalis remains a part of my deck that steamrolls opponents in certain rulesets.
