Graduating from the Splinterlands "Waur Medge Academy' campaign

Last year, I got endeared to the Splinterlands game and set a target for myself to learn and effectively played the game. I found out the Waur Medge Academy campaign and I enrolled. Some chapters/tasks were difficult but I had to repeat until I could complete them and I am glad that UI have successfully completed all the chapters in the campaign, and I am ready for ranked plays.

As a blockchain-based collectible card game, Splinterlands blends tactical gameplay with digital ownership, allowing players to battle, earn, and grow their card collections in a dynamic ecosystem. For a new user like myself, navigating the game was not easy. The "Waur Medge Academy” campaign serves as the foundational tutorial arc designed to transform beginners into confident battlers. I am happy to be one of the graduands!

I see the Waur Medge Academy beyond a tutorial. It is an initiation that introduces players to the lore of Splinterlands while guiding them through the essential mechanics that define the game. From the very beginning, the campaign draws you into a story-driven experience, starting with your journey to the academy and your encounter with early rivals.

Across 11 chapters and sub-sections, the campaign systematically breaks down the core elements of gameplay to help the new user to uderstand card types, master attack styles (Melee, Ranged, and Magic), learn the importance of armor and health mechanics, learn strategic positioning of cards during battles and be able to interprete stats and abilities for competitive advantage. Each chapter demands action. You are required to engage in guided battles, make strategic decisions, and prove your understanding before progressing. It felt like a real school experience.

What made this experience particularly rewarding was not just completing the chapters, but winning every test battle along the way. Splinterlands is often described as “easy to learn but difficult to master,” and the Academy reflects this perfectly. Early lessons feel simple, but as you progress, the game subtly pushes you to think deeper. You begin to ask questions like:

  • Should your melee units absorb damage at the front?
  • Is it better to protect ranged attackers in the backline?
  • How do abilities interact with armor and positioning?

By the time I reached the final chapters, I thinking like a strategist.

Upon completing the campaign, I was awarded 45 soulbound cards, forming my foundational deck for ranked battles. The cards were awarded at the successful completion of each chapter. This reward is significant for several reasons. First, these cards provide a solid starting point for entering ranked matches without needing to purchase assets upfront. With multiple card types and abilities, I now have flexibility to experiment with different match compositions.

In Splinterlands, cards can be combined and upgraded to unlock stronger stats and new abilities, meaning this “starter deck” is actually a long-term asset. I don't know if these soulbound cards would be combined. Though soulbound cards cannot be traded, they serve as a powerful base, especially for new players transitioning into competitive gameplay.

The Academy is not the destination, but the bridge into something bigger. Having completed it, I now feel equipped to step into ranked battles where real strategy, competition, and rewards come into play. Splinterlands offers multiple leagues and seasonal progression, meaning every battle contributes to growth and ranking advancement.

More importantly, I now understand that success in Splinterlands is not about having the rarest cards, but about using what you have wisely. Completing the Waur Medge Academy is more than a personal achievement. It marks the transition from curiosity to competence, from observation to participation.

For any new player entering Splinterlands, this campaign is invaluable. It doesn’t just teach you how to play, it teaches you how to think within the game. Please don't skip it. For me, the real war in the Splinterlands has only just begun.

I think I now have the courage to ourchase the spellbook. My $10 would be worth the spend because I know the basics of the game and can navigate through it.
