Flame Imp | splinterlands weekly art entry

avatar
(Edited)

Hello hive peopleeeee and happy heart's day to those who celebrate it! It's been a busy week for me again and I can't believe this took me a while to finish. With work and errands coming at me left and right, I swear, I now savor the free time I have after having to do almost 500+ samples weekly in the past week.

It feels good to have the time to do this again, though I'm still stuck on traditional... At least I'm staying creative. And I'm also hoping to save for a laptop and drawing tab so I can be a little more comfortable with drawing.

What can I say, Having a tablet gadget is still infinitely different from a graphic tablet. And for one... A graphic tablet is less distracting. So before I get carried away with other things, I present you with what's been eating my time these past 3 days

Cumulatively, this took about 4 hours to finish, but I say it's soooo worth it!
Materials: ball point pens (red, yellow, violet, orange, brown, black), liquid ink (red, yellow)

This is my render of the Flame imp

For reference

Then here are my progression shots:

Someone at work pointed this out while I was sketching this last Friday, but I was asked why I always start so messy and so formless. I just replied "it has to be ugly before it gets pretty" and I think all artists have that phase in their drawing process where everything just looks awkward and that's when you're most likely to give up on a drawing because that phase is the make or break part. And since I mentioned that line, they've been using it in the lab a lot, and I find it kind of endearing.

Okay, this is the best I can do with writing today, I'm too sleepy for today. The valentine's traffic is definitely no joke 😢 my usual 30 minutes travel time home turned into an hour so I didn't even get to nap before cooking dinner.

So this is my farewell for now. I have the free time again so hopefully I can stock up on drafts and sketches again before they dump samples on me again. Night night people and have a good day~

And I haven't touched Digi 🥲 I kind of miss it but my tablet is starting to get buggy now so I can't use it to draw anymore

Your art style is evolving tho and I love it UwU

Feel my stress levels cuz this was the imp that kept whispering in my ear to send my boss my resignation letter 🤣🤣🤣

I'm just amused spl has characters that can reflect my mood too

I'm sure there are enough characters to cover just about any mood... and if not now, then eventually!

And if not, then I'll go make one eventually 🤣
I had a few OC ideas before but I just didn't know how to execute then

If/when you do create your OC's for Splinterlands... just make sure to include which splinter they are in and how they relate to the game. Many creators of OCs never actually merge them into gameplay or fit them into the Fire-Earth-Water etc splinters and it makes it not as relevant or it could have been an OC they created 10yrs ago for something else and then they want to post it now but not incorporate into the actual Splinterlands mix. I hope that made since. The funny thing is... anyone lazy could just say they are in the Neutral Splinter. hahahhaha

I'm gonna have to learn the game a bit if I do get to that point 🤣 cuz I want to give the cards abilities too if it's gonna be a character anyways

I think you will have fun in that process! There is a lot of artistic inspiration within all the elements of the game that anyone could reimagine and use to get creative with. I look forward to seeing what you do.

You are talking about me aren't you 🤣? I feel like I'm the only one who makes OC for splinterlands xd. Thanks for explaining about how to incorporate it to the game. I would have kept doing it until someone explained it to me haha.

@solumviz No, i wasn't speaking about you. You actually create awesome characters that would easily fit into any splinter or have any kind of the abilities available in the game. OCs don't have to have a whole story or background but that have to be relevant to the game in some way.

There are many entries where they don't even bother to make any effort to create a decent character let alone one that relates to splinterlands. I had one entry that was just a character from a cartoon that i watched when i was a kid. hahahah They have no cards and don't play and just wanted SL upvotes in the contests. So, that's more of what i was talking about.

Thanks castleberry😁, I used to post splinterlands OCs without character info for the contest so I was in wrong in the past.

This shows that I'm not seeing much of splinterlands art contest post on my feed. I thought I was the only one drawing OCs. I read some the guides after your advice and it's only fair to connect it to the game somehow since splinterlands is offering big upvotes. Its a bit time consuming but its also fun to create them. I'm just glad that OCs are accepted here.

Question, are you saying that if I wrote down a short version of OC character info that's also accepted?

for eg

Character A

splinter: water
Type:Summoner(Tank)
Power: x
Special move: f
Weakness: y

I feel like this is considered as low effort hahahaha. That's why I make a short story most of the time.

We just updated the rules recently, which most people never read, to have it that OCs are somehow connected to the game. It wasn't always like that but since i'm the only curator for the art contest... i have been deciding how much and who to vote for. When it came to OCs... i can tell who puts effort in or not, since i am an artist too. I have played the game since it started so i can also tell who has no idea what the game is about but just wants to get some votes for some low effort art.

I meant that, as you put as much time and effort into the art... your OC doesn't need to have a full on backstory or all the stats figured out or all that stuff. The more effort in all of that will factor in to my vote weight... but i don't think i have ever skipped you before. You have always been one of the more detail oriented artists and you always put effort into all your stuff.

Anything is accepted... but an OC with no link to the game.... at least a mentioning of a splinter or something SL relevant. Most just copy paste a part of the lore and then draw a sketch and post it the first day the contest comes out. Many of the scammers quit getting rewarded... that's why the quality of art has increased. However, there is a stable of excellent winners that are consistently good.

So, i try to balance out who has won recently, the quality of the art, quality of the post, effort put in, do they even play the game etc. and use my best judgement. It's challenging but you have and had nothing to ever worry about that i know of. It's been fun curating your stuff... especially, your OCs. I think more people should do them. One day, maybe their character will be turned into a card. That would be cool!!!!

Damn bro, this sounds like a lot of work to do. Curating every post based on these conditions takes a lot time and effort from your side as well. I hope you are getting a little something for this hahaha...

Everything makes sense now and I'm glad that splinterlands is curating artworks on the basis of effort and creativity. It feels fair to me and that's why I'm participating when I can because I know that if I put in the effort I'll get noticed.

Honestly bro, participating in spl was my comeback on hive after the Terra luna crash😑. Without this I'd probably be drawing much less. What I really like about your curation style is that you don't seem to care whether the user is new on hive, you just reward them based on the quality. This is what I was looking for a long time. On some sites it takes years to get noticed regardless of how good your skills are xd.

I barely see your artworks. Must be busy with all this huh. I saw some of your old traditional artworks. Those are great hehe. Don't you paint digitally?

I gave you the short version just of what i do for SL and the art contest. I was brought on to help since i am an artist and i run and manage the whole Alien Art Hive community. I curate there for OCD and i also run and manage the Photography Lovers community and curate for OCD there as well. I also curate for the NFT Showroom which is incubated by OCD as well.

SO, i wear a lot of hats behind the scenes and constantly work to make sure quality it the focus and real user engagement etc. I try to reward the newer folks to help get them a boost since i know what it's like to start small and not get noticed even though you put a lot of effort into a post. I have 2 How to get a great start on Hive posts i made to help noobs learn all the stuff nobody tells you here.

I do a bit of digital art but mostly traditional and then mixed media after that in editing or composition etc. I've been exploring the AI art stuff for a couple years now and it's all fun. But, i don't post often on my own personal stuff because i'm always busy doing that other stuff i just mentioned. There is a lot of rules and guidelines for me to do all that stuff i cannot discuss... but, let's just say this is all a labor of love. Glad you are here and stuck around. You have a promising future here if you just keep on grinding it out like you have been.

I see now, no wonder you don't have time to blog. Its a lot of work but I'm glad it's fun for you hehe.

When I started here I asked a friend for help and she provided me 4 guides and I did my research before posting here. It was super long and damn, I thought this site way too complicated for me haha. It was a really bad idea to show it to someone joining the site xd. Then I found some other lite version noob guides to help me navigate hive efficiently. Too bad I didn't see the guides that you wrote. Is it pinned on alien community? Still like to give it a read incase I missed anything.

I'm glad that I stuck around. Didn't really expect that my art skills, something that I left in the dust will help me earn one day haha. All thanks to hive community :)

Oh yeah I remember this one 😂. I read the first one and thought "This is short so let's read part 2." I saw the length and dropped it xd. I think I read it part by part on my first few months but didn't finish it🥲.

I read an even longer one than this from ryzeonline but it explains how hive functions. That guide definitely wrecked me xd.

You posted it huh. Looks great obviously ☺️. I like how you try characters which are mostly ignored by others haha.

I'm still working on mine. Hope I can post it tommorow 😭. Still need a lot of work on the background.
