Paths to Power in Splinterlands – How I Would Start Today
Welcome back all splinter fans
This week we dive into the Paths to Power community challenge and this is one of those topics that never really gets old. We talked about journeys and starting paths before but splinterlands keeps evolving and that means strategies evolve too. So it felt like the right moment to revisit this from a fresh angle.
Why I Play Splinterlands
Before talking about power paths or earnings I think it is important to ask a simple question. Why are you here.
For me splinterlands always started as a game. A fun one. Over time it became more than that with tokenomics community tools and side projects. But the core was always gameplay first.
This matters because if you come only to earn money you will approach things very differently than someone who comes to play and then discovers the ecosystem around it. Neither is wrong but knowing your own motivation helps you avoid frustration later.
For me it was simple. I liked the game first and the rest slowly grew around it.
First Steps as a New Player
If you are completely new my advice is still very straightforward.
Start with the campaign. It is fun and it introduces the mechanics at a relaxed pace. You learn how mana works how rulesets change battles and what splinters feel good to play.

After that head into frontier. Play some battles. Win some lose some. This is where you really feel if the combat system clicks for you. Frontier is perfect because the barrier to entry is low and you can experiment without pressure. Tip: do not try to rush into gold you will get frustrated... if you need any frontier help reach out many will delegate you some cards to play with.

At this stage do not rush anything. Just play.
One step I consider extremely important is joining the Discord server. This cannot be overstated. The splinterlands Discord is full of players who are happy to help new people. You can ask questions share screenshots and learn things that would take weeks to figure out alone.
Once you reach the point where you know the game is something you enjoy then it is time for the real commitment.
Buy the spellbook.

It costs around 10 dollars and you get roughly half of that back in in game value through rewards and unlocks. More importantly it unlocks the full experience. This is where the real journey starts.
From Frontier to Modern
After buying the spellbook I would still recommend staying in frontier for a while. Build a decent starter collection. Learn which cards you enjoy playing and which splinters suit your style.
Only then move into modern. Modern is more competitive and more rewarding but it can also be overwhelming if you jump in too early. You will found out that you quickly also need some modern card and not only fronter
Tip: once you have completed you frontier deck and if you choose the path of earning it will take some weeks you can play modern i think in bronze but do not expect to get much higher than bronze I
Around this time you should also look for a guild.

Joining an active guild is one of the easiest paths to passive progress. Guild brawls earn you merits and SPS and over time this adds up. Ask around before joining. Activity matters more than size.
This is usually the first point where earning becomes noticeable and that brings us to tokens.
Understanding Rewards and Tokens
As a player there are two basic in game reward currencies you should understand early.

GLINT is earned mainly through gameplay and events. You can spend it in the reward shop to buy chests and items that help grow your collection.

MERITS are earned through guild brawls. These are used in the guild shop and allow you to buy special reward cards that cannot be obtained elsewhere.
These two are your core gameplay rewards.
Then we have the main ecosystem tokens that interact with the wider economy.

CREDITS are a stable in game currency pegged to the dollar. They are mainly used for market purchases and offer a simple way to buy cards without worrying about price fluctuations.

DEC or Dark Energy Crystals is an in game currency soft pegged to the dollar so this price fluctuates. It is commonly used for market transactions card rentals and various in game fees.

SPS or Splintershards is the governance token of splinterlands. It can be earned through gameplay staking and events. SPS gives voting power rewards and access to certain features and it plays a major role in long term progression.
Understanding these tokens early helps you make better decisions and avoid wasting value.
My Personal Advice on Power and Progress
If I had to start over today my approach would still be very similar.
Play first. Learn. Experiment. Then slowly invest.
Do not compare yourself too much to others. Splinterlands is a game where you can spend a lot of money very quickly but you do not have to. Always look at your own position and your own budget.
Progress is not a race.
This post only covered the gameplay side of splinterlands. We did not touch land trading markets or deeper economic strategies. Those are powerful paths too but only when you are ready for them or genuinely interested.
If any new player reads this and wants to know more about those parts feel free to ask. I am always happy to answer questions or turn them into a future post.
Until next time
