Splinterlands - Can even a bull run repair the game tokenomics?

avatar

I had a moment of clarity and with the plethora of the assets in the Splinterlands I wonder if even a bull run can repair or alleviate the game tokenomics that went down to drain. Don't get me wrong, I love this game on one side, but cannot but be mutinous about how the team handles the tokenomics in their run for money. I understand that in order to develop this game quite a bit of money are required, but I was hoping to get that from investors rather than basing it on the players. The marked is flooded in every aspect with a huge supply which creates continuous pressure on the price moving it to new All Time Lows. Even with new money coming into this ecosystem, it is hard for me to see a reversal trend of what's happening. And even if something seems to get back on the track, some other release translated into overwhelming inflation kicks it back.

Splintershards - $SPS Governance token

Splintershards ($SPS) is the native governance token from the Splinterlands and it has witnessed a notable decline in value. Several factors contribute to this downturn. Firstly, market saturation and competition within the gaming token landscape have diluted SPS's prominence. That coupled with a huge supply of 3 Billion tokens and a bear market, where the sure thing for a downslope along the way. Additionally there wasn't any game mechanics to burn SPS seriously or give it more use cases through locking until not long time ago when it was factored as a requirement for Daily rewards. But even this seemed to be too little, too late. The enormous supply still puts continuous pressure on the price and value from within.

Dark Energy Crystals - $DEC Stablecoin

Darn Energy Crystals or $DEC is the native stablecoin which hardly stood its peg in time. During bull run it spiked positively, but once with the bear market and unattended its mechanics it dropped immensely. Some desperate measures were taken by the Splinterlands team through different Promise-to-pay schemes (in the form of DEV-Batteries) which alleviated the pain and helped with the price move towards the peg. Still, the price proves itself volatile and one can only wonder if it will move into the right direction or if another team decision will be taken which will turn it upside down.

NFT cards

The Splinterlands market was flooded with Chaos Legion packs and while we are still recovering from that, the team announced a new Edition hitting the market in the form of Rebellion. After I have bough Chaos Legion packs for $4 and having its price go under $1, how can someone think release another Edition set in this moment, while we are still traversing a bear market. If you are an investor in Splinterlands and want to make some profits with the #NFT cards, I would simply forget about it. I've got burned too many times to fall again for it.

Rebellion edition

Rebellion set is the fifth core edition of Splinterlands and introduces new gameplay elements. While I don't think is the right time for this release, we will see how it plays out and who knows, maybe DEC and SPS will be used for that and improve the scarcity. Here are some additional details on that:

  • Each Rebellion booster pack will contain five randomly selected cards, with at least one rare card guaranteed.
  • The base price for a Rebellion booster pack is 5000 Credits or 5000 DEC, with discounts available using VOUCHER tokens.
  • The Untamed set will no longer be allowed in Modern format battles when the Rebellion set is released.
  • The top six accounts with the most Rebellion booster packs purchased during the presale will have the opportunity to design a Legendary Summoner card.
  • The top 250 accounts on the presale leaderboard will earn in-game titles based on their position.
  • Players who purchase Rebellion packs during the presale will receive two limited edition promo cards.
  • The airdrop system will be revamped with the introduction of "Conflicts," where players stake unopened Rebellion packs and cards to earn airdrop rewards.
  • The Rebellion set will introduce four new unit abilities: Armored Strike, Corrosive Ward, Flank, and Lookout.
  • Some of the Summoners in the Rebellion set will be dual-element, allowing them to summon cards from two elements on the same team.
  • Rebellion Summoners will also feature a new mechanic called Summoner Tactics, where players can choose between two sets of buffs or debuffs after both players reveal their teams.

I only wish I find the strength to have some more hope on Splinterlands as simply I love this game and I am with it since before its inception. To be real, the tokenomics are as bad as can be and we need some better ways to strengthen those. If it was for me, I would fill up Splinterlands with some nice bags of stablecoins like $HBD, put it into Savings and from that 20% APR each month I would try to cover some of the costs. This is one example of thinking to get value out of the game and bring it within, or at least not put pressure on the tokenomics from here and add inflation at every corner. We need more out of the box thinking with options that should not be at the players' expenses. I had to say it all as I've hold this within and maybe someone will read it and try to come with better decisions in the future.

You have highlighted some points about splinterlands including, CL packs, SPS price and DEC. I also bought 600+ CL packs, a node license and SPS also. All these assets have lost their value. I just hope the next bull run market can have a positive impact.
I love this game and hope wth next market reversal we can see a good value of the assets.
