This is what I learnt after opening 60 Rift Watcher Gems

I got some DEC and I used it to buy potions. It's time to find out what I'll find inside the Rift Watchers gems in my possession and I have to say, I'm excited.

At the time of writing, I have 122 packs in my possession and just like @jongolson, I have this uncontrollable urge to open every pack in my collection. I try to manage my addiction by not buying potions but most times, it is all for nought because I'll still somehow get the potions.

Anyway, opening 122 Rift Watcher gems will require 610 each of legendary and alchemy potions. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've actually opened that many packs in one go before; most times, I open packs in batches of 50 spread over a couple of weeks.

I decided to try something new, so I started squeezing out funds to buy enough potions for 100 gems. I have to say, this turned out to be more tedious and expensive than I envisaged.

I have to admit, being quite poor these days plays into my perception of money but it must be said that buying 500 potions is not cheap. I have to say that despite the 50 potion bonus, I don't know how you guys do it and I don't think I'll ever be doing this again.

In total, I spent around 44,000 DEC to get all the potions and at the current market value, that's around $32. I've never sat down to crunch the numbers but sometimes I wonder if these potions are truly worth the stress at the end of the day.

What did I get?

For what it's worth, I bought 500 potions, got 50 more and that's enough to open 100 SPlinterlands pack/collection. However, it needs to be mentioned that I never intended to open all the Rift Watcher gems in my collection, so while I will use all the potions, I intend to split them with the 40 Chaos Legion packs I'm still holding.

Considering the price of each Rift Watcher Gem and the amount I spent to get all the potions, it is safe to say that my expectations were high before opening. Here is a screenshot of all the Rift Watchers monsters I found in the packs I opened.

One of the striking details about this Rift Watcher collection is how menacing the monsters look. The art in this collection is top-drawer stuff and I reckon that will be a factor in determining the future value of these monsters.

Anyway, after opening 60 packs, I didn't get any gold foil legendary that I always hope for but I did get some other impressive monsters, including a gold foil epic. My total haul had;

  • 291 regular monsters of varying rarities. In the regular foil department, I had 200 commons, 73 rares, 87 epics and just the four legendaries.
  • There were only 9 gold foils in my entire haul; No legendary as earlier mentioned, 1 epic, 1 rare and 7 commons.

According to Peakmonsters, at the time of writing, the total value of my haul is roughly $234. Simple division puts the average value derived from each gem to be around $3.9.

Some thoughts

Each gem costs around $5.4 and opening costs a tiny bit more when you consider it requires 10 potions(5 of each) to open it, so I'm generally in the reds. Now, while hoping the airdrop is a good reason to buy gems in the game, if you're not buying a decent number of gems, your chances of benefitting from the airdrop is quite slim.

Again, this is just throwing out an idea but at the time of writing, the secondary market price on Hive-engine is around $3.92. Now, this is marginally higher than the average price of $3.9 worth of assets from each gem but I reckon that it is a much better margin than what you'd calculate if you buy from inside Splinterlands.

So, in summary, any future purchase of Rift Watcher gems will be from the secondary market because I'll be too poor to make any serious "splash" as I did with Chaos Legion when I bought over 1000 eligible packs.

If your plan is to buy Rift Watchers in the hundreds or thousands, then you should buy in-game to hunt the airdrop. However, if like me, you only intend to buy a couple of gems for opening, you're better off just buying from the secondary market.

I really wish I had more money to buy Splinterlands assets at the moment. I've put a few of my duplicate cards up for sale on the market to try to raise some funds to buy different assets, but they're not really selling. I am in the middle of opening up the 54 Riftwatchers packs I was able to procure. I'm doing them one at a time to make it last a little longer. haha.

Going forward, I think I probably will buy most of the ones I get on Hive Engine. I won't get enough of them to really get much in the airdrops either way.
