You Can Now Earn on Twitter But There's A Catch

After what feels like forever Twitter has finally rolled out plans of rewarding content creators on its platform with partial ad revenue for creating such content. This isn't something brand new either. Youtube for example has been splitting ad revenue with content creators for years and it's one of its biggest driving factors. But can a platform like twitter pull off the same thing?

Let's take a deeper dive into what's going on.

Social and Payments Background

Trust me when I say there has never been a shortage of social media platforms that try to mimic the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Youtube and simply say they are cutting profits with content creators. It's been going on for well over 15 years and if you've been in the game for long enough like me you'll remember such names as Yuwie and countless others that attempted this.

They all ended with a bunch a spammers and scammers coming in and gaming the system for rewards which ultimately then crashed. You see some people are nutz and you give them a penny and they will do the wildest scam and spam things for a few pennies it never fails.

This is why at first I was a little skeptical of Steem (now Hive) as it brought back those memories of these types of platforms. However I have to say Hive has done a really awesome job so far at holding decent value and not triggering spam. While there is of course some vote botting and other junk going on it's nothing compared to the filth that steem has turned into now.

Twitter has rolled out this feature most likely as a way to combat against the explosive growth that threads has had. By awarding content creators the idea is that more people would spend time on Twitter and create more valuable content on it.

It's already been claimed that one has resulted in over $100,000 being paid out to their stripe account which is honestly massive. Granted this account seems to have 1.9 million followers and each post seems to get over 1 million views with 12 or so posts a day. But even if you did a fraction of that at say 1 million a day that mean's $10,000.

Web 3 Could Now Fall Behind

With this new move for web 2 offering up content creators with ad share we are most likely going to see others follow up as a way to retain and grow their influence. It's something many have wanted for a long time and while web3 / crypto was suppose to offer that they have fallen drastically short. For some reason web3 for the most part besides LeoThreads has been the only one I've seen to add ads into their platform to generate income. I have no idea why other platforms like 3speak, other hive front ends etc don't and then issue it back to their creators on the platform but if they don't soon I honestly don't see them going anywhere.

Twitter currently has a lot of rules as to who they are letting in.

  1. Only ads that appear in reply threads would be used for payout.
  2. You much be a Twitter blue subscribe
  3. You must have a Stripe account
  4. More than 5 million tweet impressions in each month for the last 3 months.

If your wanting to earn and don't have the required amount of details above check out LeoFinance a blockchain based crypto token based twitter alternative.

The latest report shows that over 5 million dollars was sent to content creators and one of the largest meme creators hall of fam showed a screenshot of them earning over $100,000 in a single month!

This just goes to show you how much a company rakes in for profits just from running ads and this is only one single spot on twitter there are countless other revenue sources for the company.

Now imagine this money applied to a token like the $LEO token and just how powerful of a money magnate it would be. Even if LEO did 1% of what twitter is doing right now that would still be $50,000 per month generated that would not only bolster the price of LEO but also the main blockchain it runs on Hive. More places need to start adapting here on hive and running ads to fuel their projects, token values and stop taking money out of Hive.

Let's start making the change and demanding it from other front ends here on Hive.

I agreed. If @threespeak start including ads in the videos like Youtube and start sharing the profits with the users like Leofinance that will be hughe for Hive.

exactly, money speaks to content creators. Sure things like having a decentralized system are nice and good but honestly if it doesn't pay the bucks no one is going to really use it or be attracted to it. I think it's time we get used to ads being ok and that in the web3 space we the users and creators benefit form it instead of old web2 where only the company benefits from it.

I agree with you. I don't know if is greed or stubness that prevent other Dapps including Ads and share the profits with users. Only Leofinance looks like see the right path to walk.

It's good to see Twitter sharing its ads revenue to its creators. $100k a month is wow! It will be great indeed if Hive frontends will do the same thing. If they don't want to share the revs to the contributors, at least they can use the revenues to fund their projects.

Exactly and in a way that helps Hive because less money is asked from the pool. To me those pool funds should only be given out on milestones and new projects being built on Hive. Not to keep operations going and just be a constant drain.

Yes, I share the same thought. The ads would really help in funding the continuing operational costs of older projects so they can give way for new ones to get funded too.

$100K is a lot really!! Creators will now be incentivized more to put in valuable content and match the criteria that's needed to receive a payout on the ad revenue the platform is generating. But I feel that it's still exclusionary to a large degree. For example, Stipe doesn't support many countries yet.

It wonderful if other Hive frontends can tap into this model to a generate revenue stream for their projects.

Fully agree and that's one of the huge benefits of crypto is it would be an even playing field for all and anyone can get started with earning for what they create. No 5 million twitter impressions needed lol

Exactly! Crypto is inclusive and doesn't require first having a decent amount of followings to start earning. Besides, Twitter users are renting almost everything there, it can be taken away from them with a snap of a finger.

I believe to put up ads and then share a portion with the community is an additional incentive for people to stick around!
