Hi battle mages, I hope you are having a great Splinterday! Today's Battle Mage Secrets Challenge is the Even Stevens ruleset.

RULESET: Even Stevens

Description:

Only units with even mana costs may be used.

This rule does not apply to summoners.

Even Stevens and the counterpart ruleset Odd Ones Out teach you to know the mana value of your cards off by heart. As these rulesets appear quite often, it is a good idea to balance your deck with equal sets of even and uneven mana cards. Some to the neutral cards come in handy here and when playing in Wild League, having a larger range of choice is a big bonus.

These 2 rulesets sometimes don’t allow you to put the best cards in the best positions so it may at times be necessary to improvise or take a risk. This makes Even Stevens all the more enjoyable as you cannot always anticipate the playing field. The battle I have chosen to study today is an example, where Reach monsters are not available and I had to improvise with a passive second position tank.

⚔️ GETTING READY FOR A FIGHT ⚔️

The battle I have chosen for this week’s Battle Mage Secrets Challenge is a water war. The ruleset is Even Stevens. The available splinters are Water and Death. The mana cap is 49.

Here is the team I put together:

I had a few candidates in mind for an Evens Stevens bout from the water deck, so KELYA is my choice of summoner for this battle. I still have him at level 4 but judging from the low market prices at the moment, it may be appropriate to level him up soon…

DIEMONSHARK is the obvious even mana tank, especially in a higher mana battle. He has always done me a good service as a frontliner and he should do the same here.

Next comes GARGOYA LION. He cannot attack from the second position, but there is no even mana Reach monster around to fill that spot and I don’t want to put OSHANNUS in second position, so GARGOYA LION is acting as a buffer ahead of the midfield. As I am also anticipating some magic retaliation, so his taunt ability should be a useful defence.

Here is His Highness OSHANNUS. He is still my favourite water monster to this day. He is just unbeatable and a must inclusion in Even Stevens scenarios. He will be able to attack unscathed from the third position for some time, inflicting maximum damage on the enemy.

In fourth position comes the SUPPLY RUNNER, who admittedly is in the wrong spot and should rather be in fifth position. It is a lucky blunder though, knowing that we will be victorious in this battle. He is usually placed in the backline and with good speed, he usually has a good hitrate.

In fifth spot is the DEEP LURKER. His Opportunity ability is hugely valuable to spread the fire around. He is another must inclusion in an Even Stevens lineup.

Last but not least comes KULU SWIMHUNTER. At relatively low mana and high health, he is a good candidate for the last position. He is susceptible to Sneak attacks but should be able to shoot twice or more.

This is my chosen lineup for this battle so lets see how it plays out!

⚔️ THE BATTLE ⚔️

ROUND 1

At first glance I had to grin at my opponent's lineup with 2 silent tanks in second and third position. On the other hand, Ruler of the Seas with an Alric buff was going to be a bother. The round opened with magic attacks all round and DIEMONSHARK toasted the Sea Monster followed by a solid trample on enemy tank number 2. Unfortunately DIEMONSHARK then succumbed to enemy magic and did not survive the round.

ROUND 2

In Round 2 GARGOYA LION did well to Taunt some magic attacks and DEEP LURKER scored the scalp of the Sea Genie with his second hit. With two major enemy players down, things looked swell.

ROUND 3

Enemy tank 2 said bye bye upon a solid KULU SWIMHUNTER swipe and GARGOYA LION fell at the hands of Ruler of the Seas, who was reduced to 1 health by the opportunist DEEP LURKER.

ROUND 4

Round 4 was uneventful except for the demise of Ruler of the Seas hit by, you guessed it, DEEP LURKER! Oh and OSHANNUS had to go... he did well!

ROUND 5

Round 5 saw the beginning of the end for the enemy team, when Goblin Mech was eaten by... DEEP LURKER. What a valuable protagonist he is! Rounds 6&7 saw Prismatic Energy chewed up by, once again, DEEP LURKER. It was a relatively easy victory in the end.

⚔WATCH BATTLE⚔

HERO OF THE DAY

none other than... DEEP LURKER!!

CLOSING THOUGHT

The Even Stevens ruleset is a plausible answer to so many people’s complaints, that there are too many cards on the market and too many new monsters coming on the scene all the time. I personally love the growing choice of cards in my deck. It allows me to develop more and more intricate strategies, focus on some of my little darlings and let others rest. The more choice of cards I have, the better I get at playing Even Stevens!

See you around Splinterheads!
