Modern Or Wild - Trying To Maximize My Splinterlands Earnings

Modern or Wild.jpg

Hello, Splinter and Leo family!

Just like in my last week's post, this one will also cover one of the financial aspects of Splinterlands. As we know, the sweet, sweet SPS can be earned with various methods such as tournaments, chest, guild brawls, and of course by winning ranked battles.

In this article, I will discuss my main source of income in the game - ranked battles. It has become a part of my morning routine to play a few battles while enjoying a cup of coffee.

Yes, it may sound wonderfully laid back and usually it is just that. However, lately, I've been really struggling to find my place in Splinterlands. Struggling to find that balance between earning SPS and getting enough chests to open.

From Wild to Modern

During the previous season, I read an article about the bots being removed from the Modern league. The author also mentioned better SPS rewards so I immediately decided I was going to be FOMOing in and start the next season in Modern.

The rewards in the Bronze league levels were indeed pretty good ranging from ~0.5 to 1 DEC per win. When I say good, I mean good compared to the Wild formats Silver league rewards which were something like ~0.2 - 0.5 DEC. This is actually a bad comparison because the reason why my Modern rewards were so low was my low reward boost multiplier which began to decrease once I rose to higher levels of Silver league.

SPS & Chests

I'm currently playing in Modern Silver 2 and obviously, the rewards have decreased here as well. The biggest difference compared to the Wild Silver leagues is not only I'm not getting that much SPS but I'm also not getting that much chests either!

As for the last three days, I've got only 2 silver chests per day. In the Wild, I got at least 6 chests/day. The reason for this? Honestly, I'm just getting my ass whooped big time in the Modern.

I remember the space between Silver 1 and 2 being filled with bots during last season making the gameplay quite boring. Now don't get me wrong, I still got beaten by them quite often but at some point, they become somewhat predictable. Also, when I rose in Silver 1 and was at the gates of Gold, I became to get some good battles against real human opponents.

Still, the SPS rewards weren't that amazing.

Bronze Math

Now let's begin to do some speculation.

If I was merely thinking about SPS gains from battles, I would say the most optimal place for me would be Bronze 1 so that my rating would be enough for Silver but I would just continue to play in the Bronze league.

Simple as that? Definitely not.

First of all, I would then be getting Bronze League chests and while I would get a lot of them, the rewards they hold wouldn't be that great. The SPS rewards from chests would suck and also the chance of getting legendary or/and gold foil cards would be really low.

It's extremely hard to calculate and compare SPS rewards between leagues. Even when I'm usually getting beaten up and therefore not earning from battles, I might get a nice amount of SPS from a chest. Just yesterday I got 35 SPS that way and that equals something like 5 days of battle earnings.

But if I stayed in the Bronze league, I might have a chance to compete for the Leaderboard rewards which are in DEC... decisions, decisions.

The Cards

To make the decision-making even harder - then there are card rewards.

The big question is of course will the chains be unlocked? Will the Soulbound cards be tradable on the market and when?

Assuming that a day like that will come sometime, the next question is, will there be demand for those and will the Land expansion feed that demand?

Even though the chains would stay on, stacking up Soulbound cards is a good bet in my opinion. The advantage the powerful cards can add to your gameplay is obviously difficult to calculate but it's there. If you aren't renting cards, for example, you can cut down the DEC costs by replacing rented cards with Soulbound ones.

Once you start to climb up to higher leagues, the more powerful cards also give you more rewards as higher-level cards won't receive the penalty percentage.

One thing that is also attracting me back to Wild is the possibility to use my whole deck again. That's definitely a big factor favouring the Wild League. For example, I upgraded my Crustacean King card to level 3 which is now worth $4.37. It has little rental value so it has been kinda laying around idle during this season.

Instead, I have been using Merdaali Guardian as a healer with my Water deck. A level 3 Merdaali Guardian would cost $4.20 which I don't have the resources for at the moment so I'm using the level 1 card and receiving the penalty.

Right now it feels like I'm not fully utilizing my deck while playing in Modern League since after all, it was created to compete in Wild.

The Decision

So here it is. I've decided to head back home to Wild once this season ends. The option to get more Soulbound cards, being able to use all of my cards, and getting more chests just weighs more on the scale than the potential SPS rewards. I can always increase my SPS holdings(and reward multiplier) by buying from SPS from the market. I can also get it from the chests as well as from the Brawl battles.

The only way to accumulate Soulbound cards is to get them from chests and that probably won't last forever. As I do believe these cards will increase in value when the shackles are broken, I find it a better idea to bet on those at the moment.

That being said, at the same time I also have faith in the future of SPS and definitely won't be neglecting that.

Conclusion

So why all this fuzz about SPS?

I don't currently own a single Land plot I've been closely following the development. As an SPS holder, I'm obviously interested in the impact Land 1.5 and further updates will have on both DEC and SPS.

Just yesterday I read this interesting article by @bitcoinflood about the topic. His arguments make a lot of sense and I share his positive view on the future of Splinterlands assets. The land will surely create demand for DEC and that will eventually reflect on the SPS price.

So, in a nutshell: I'm in it for all the Splinterlands assets! Just have to find the right balance to maximize my earnings in all areas of the game.
