The Untamed Era

UntamedEra.jpg

Greetings, Splinterlands fans!

It's been an interesting week for me while playing our favourite blockchain game, Splinterlands. Just a couple of days ago I had a bit of a shock when I decided to jump from the Wild League to Modern to hunt for more lucrative SPS rewards. I knew it was gonna be tough but I quickly learned it was even more competitive than I thought. Some of the new Rebellion cards are top-notch, I tell you that!

At the end of this article, I tell you more about how I learned to survive and developed a great daily playing strategy but now it's time to take a trip down memory lane and take a look at some older cards that meant a lot to me back in the day.

I started playing Splinterlands in January 2021 so exactly 3 years ago. At that time the Untamed edition was on sale and started building my very first deck by buying some packs and single cards from the market.

Serpentine Spy

One first card I got was SERPENTINE SPY which gave me an advantage against some of the opponents constantly overpowering me.

This Fire Splinter unit is a pretty powerful card for those lower-mana battles because of its relatively good speed which allows it to make the first strike. This, and his Opportunity ability often proved to be a game-changing combination because Serpentine Spy was able to take out the whole enemy back-line starting from the weakest one.

Back in its prime, Serpentine Spy was costing about $2 to $3 but its value has since come down quite a bit as newer cards have emerged. Also, the demand for the Spy has decreased since recently the Untamed cards were moved to be played only in the Wild.

I haven't owned Serpentine Spy in a long time but such expertise is still needed in my game play and I have filled the gap it left with cards such as Gobalano Soldier and Orelella Abadon.

Some time ago I was writing this post series called Unforgettable Untamed and one edition was featuring the Serpentine spy. Apparently, I was also still feeling quite excited about it! If you want to read more about this killer card, check out my article here.

Good memories of this guy! 😊

War Chaang

Do you remember this massive creature? I haven't come across WAR CHAANG on the battlefield in a long time but it was absolutely brilliant card to have!

I don't actually remember whether I got it from a pack or did I bought it but I do remember being excited about its ability and stats.

War Chaang has not only one but two attacks - Ranged(1) and Melee(2). This makes it fit into many different rulesets. For example, it's great with Going the Distance ruleset where only monsters with Ranged attack can be used. Also, with rulesets such as Melee Mayhem and Super Sneak you'll be able to enjoy both of his attacks while hiding it safely somewhere in the back.

Even though War Chaang's was much higher some time ago, it is still a relatively expensive card. As we can see in the picture above, there aren't even that many cards up for sale at the moment.

If we take its retaliate ability also into consideration, I'd say the Neutral Splinter War Chaang at the price of $1.50 is a bargain. This is a monster I'm seriously considering buying and living those fond memories all over again. 🐘

Ice Pixie

This here is a card that has stuck with me right from the start. After I first pulled ICE PIXIE from an Untamed pack, I immediately fell in love with it. Costing only 2 mana points, Ice Pixie is a great fit for low-mana battles as well as being a "last-second fill-in" unit.

It's Flying has helped me to win many Earthquake battles through the years as she is also very hard to hit with Ranged or Melee attacks.

Just like the other Untamed cards, Ice Pixies price has dropped significantly and a single one now costs only $0.60. I have been watching its price development and been kinda DCAing into buying cards and then upgraded her to level 2.

One of my most popular strategies is to play with Alric Stormbringer who'll buff the magic attacks of all monsters by +1. This will make Ice Pixie quite dangerous for such a small low-mana creature. Another thing is that there isn't that much competition for low-mana Water magic monsters, especially for those that cost only 2 mana points.

There are some really great new cards nowadays in the same mana category such as DAIGENDARK SURVEYOR here. This one can be put next to Moxian Rebel for example to gain the same attack strength as Ice Pixie.

Daigendark Surveyor also has more health and the Magic Reflect ability which would make her a better choice on many occasions.

Still, Ice Pixie is a card I'm not willing to let go of.

Conclusion

So are these old but gold cards still an option for me?

The ancient Splinterlands theorists say, yes.

After playing a couple of days in the Modern League I noticed I was getting more SPS and way fewer chests than I received in the Wild. I then had this crazy idea - why not play both?

I'm currently working on this strategy of playing about Wild 10 battles in the morning and trying to get at least 3 daily chests. Later on, I will then play a couple more to reach 4 chests and in the evening I will switch and play the rest in the Modern.

This will allow me to enjoy the best of both worlds: generous SPS rewards of Modern while still receiving daily (and seasonal) chests through Wild!

Cards like Ice Pixie still have a place in my line-ups and considering the prices of the rest of these "forgotten" Untamed cards, I think I might even add a couple more! Then it would be just like in the good ol' days!
