Onboarding Guide: Getting DEC Into Splinterlands Via Keychain

I've recently been working on onboarding new players into @splinterlands, and one question I've gotten several times is "how to I bring DEC into the game?". There are many ways, but I'd like to share a method I recently started using which I think may be the easiest: via Hive Keychain. In this article I'll explain the exact steps, one by one.

1. Install Hive Keychain

To play Splinterlands, I think it's imperative to set up Hive Keychain. The Support team has a great article detailing exactly how to do that, so I won't repeat it here: https://support.splinterlands.com/hc/en-us/articles/4412500061588-Hive-Keychain-Installation-and-Usage.

2. Buy Hive and send it to your Hive wallet.

Hive is available on many Tier 1 and Tier 2 exchanges, including Binance, Upbit, Bitget, HTX, and can generally be fairly easily acquired.

After you do so, you can easily send it to yourself by simply putting in your username when sending it (e.g. in my case, "bravetofu"). No memo required.

This may feel foreign to those coming from most other big blockchains who expect addresses to look like 0xJk8Lb3... etc. But on Hive, addresses are human-readable names. Just another nice UX benefit of Hive.

You'll receive the Hive shortly (Hive has very fast transaction times) and will see it in your Keychain wallet.

3. Swap Within Keychain

Inside the Keychain wallet, you can directly do a swap to DEC. Simply press the "Swap" button.

Then select Hive as the currency on the top (that you're using to buy the DEC) and DEC as the currency on the bottom (that's what you're buying). Then press swap.

4. Find your DEC in Hive-Engine

Now, go to Hive Engine (personally I use https://tribaldex.com/) and log in with Keychain, then go to your wallet (i.e. https://tribaldex.com/wallet). Within a few seconds, you'll find your DEC there.

5. Transfer the DEC in-game

Now, go to Splinterlands and click on the DEC tab at the top, then on "Transfer".

Next, select "From: Hive Engine" and "To: In Game", and put in the quantity you want to transfer.

Click Transfer and approve the transaction with Keychain and within a few seconds your DEC will pop into the game and be usable in the various marketplaces (including of course PeakMonsters, my personal choice for all my buying/selling/renting activity in Splinterlands).

I hope this tutorial was useful. And btw while you're doing this, consider holding on to a little Hive along the way and powering that up in your Hive wallet :)

Vonak!

Good article and well explained for noobs. You can also skip the exchange steps if they are very new to crypto and don't have accounts on binance ect.... by buying hive directly in keychain.

Good to know, thanks @niallon11!

How are the rates when using Transak? Do they compare to what you'd find on exchanges?

About the same if your using a card to get fiat onto the exchange.

I think it's cheaper on the exchange if can do a bank transfer directly onto the cex.

Awesome, thanks again. Sounds like that's a good option for anyone who wants to save a step or doesn't have access to those exchanges.

The exchanges use the same system to process cards as keychain so if people don't already have crypto in the game it's probably an easy way to do it.

Hope those new players are coming on well.

Binance or Binance USA version?

Binance has HIVE, however I don't know about Binance.US.

If you're not able to get Hive on a US exchange, another option is to buy something like BTC or LTC and then deposit it directly into Hive Engine:

Tea I usually have to buy a low fee alt on coinbase then send it to binance USA convert it to btc then bnb then send to my wallet and swap for sps or dec then bring it over. I was hoping for a more direct route. That is why I asked about Hive on Binance USA. Do you have to sign up for an account on regular Binance

Yep those are separate accounts (Binance US and Binance)

I'll have to check this out. It's not only useful for new players but also for older players.

Yep, I just recently started doing this. Previously was always going via Binance Smart Chain & Metamask, which is kind of a pain. There might be more liquidity there so I may still do it occasionally, but this will now be my go-to most of the time.

Hive keychain is very useful indeed.

Great guide! 👍 I was thinking that you still needed to deposit the Dec into hive-engine / tribaldex wallet but apparently not 🙂

Can't have enough of these articles, experienced people can also learn because once we're used to do something a certain way, we don't look any further but there might be better ways.

Yeah I agree. And things move fast, so it's worth revisiting even the things you think you already know.

Hive is available on many Tier 1 and Tier 2 exchanges, including Binance, Upbit, Bitget, HTX, and can generally be fairly easily acquired.

Sadly, this is not true for United Stated based players. We cannot trade for spot Hive on any US based centralized exchanges. It makes Step 1 infinitely harder to accomplish. Of course, once we have Hive, things become much easier to swap for.

This. I just checked binance and they still do not allow fiat deposits. We used to be able to, though!

Try, best in that case is to deposit something like BTC or LTC directly into Hive Engine. That should work right?

You know I've never figured out how to bridge assets like BTC, ETH, LINK directly into Hive Engine. I've been slowly building up my swap.BTC position, but have no clue how to move those tokens in and out of Hive.

Both of those should be relatively easy simply using the deposit/withdraw function in Hive-Engine no?

It very well could be but I've never tried it. As a creature of habit I've just used the bridge to BNB Smart Chain to bridge any assets in and out of Hive.

This came to me at the right time, because I decided to buy some Hive after dip. I had a method to do this, but that seems easier to me. Thanks!

Find it really difficult to get DEC here in the UK, sure there are options that I don’t know of but Transak is always temperamental for me !BBH

Alright well have you tried other exchanges that have HIVE?

You can check under markets at https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/hive-blockchain/. There's Upbit, Bitget, MEXC, Gate.io, HTX... I'm sure one of those at least is supported in the UK.

Working my way through them. UK banks also make it difficult to put money on to exchanges, had to open a new bank account to get money on to an exchange

Useful Information

As the cryptocurrency market heats up, it will be important to make onboarding or random investment in the altcoin lotto easy. Many altcoin investors simply create a list and invest 50$ in all. If we are easy, we can get some of that and increase liquidity and knowledge about Hive. So this is great info.
