Epic Battle Scene - a Splinterlands Art Collaboration

Hello and Welcome to a new Episode of my Splinterlands Fanart Series.

This episode was created in collaboration with @hadley4

Let's start this art project from the beginning...

...you guys know that I enjoy the Splinterlands art contest. The majority of the posts I share here are fanarts. But for some time now, it has been feeling quite monotonous, which is why I plan to give my fanart series something new and fresh.

I reached out to @hadley4 on Instagram, a digital artist who also creates a lot of fanart here on HIVE, and asked him about an art collaboration.

He made a good proposal:

The idea is as follows: Hadley selects a card from the Riftwatchers set for me, and I select one for him. Then, we draw a battle scene in which the card chosen by the other person wins the fight.

Sounds exciting, doesn't it?

Okay, so we both had one week to create this battle scene between two highly detailed characters. However, since I also had to plan a trip to Switzerland during that week, it became quite tight on time.
But since this collaboration is important to me, i ended up spending hours on this post anyways!😁

The biggest challenge for me was finding the right pose. I experimented a lot until I finally found the right perspective and proportions for the battle scene.

Once I had it, I finally got into the workflow.

In my painting style, a good lineart is key to a beautiful overall image, so I invest a lot of effort in making it as clean as possible.

A helpful tip that is standard for many digital artists, but one I'd like to emphasize, is starting with a rough sketch and building upon it in new drawing layers.
You can repeat this step as many times as necessary until you are finally satisfied with your lineart.

Once this is done, it's time to start coloring.

For that, I open a new drawing layer where I roughly fill in the intended colors.

Next, I open another layer that I use for shadows. I start by focusing on large areas. Then I progressively add more detail.

Once the shading is complete, I start working on the rough light rendering.

The highlights are added in the last step on the final layer.

Light highlights indeed reveal the texture of an object. Whether it's metallic, matte, porous, each material has its unique surface characteristics.

•All painting work was done on Ipad with Procreate.
•Video editing and GIF animation done with Luma Fusion

Before i show you my finished battle scene lets take a closer look on the featured cards:

These are two summoners from the Riftwatchers set. They both cost only 4 mana for phase and close range buff which you should not sleep on.

Keep in mind we are actually burning Riftwatchers Packs on a daily basis until November 15th. If this packs are not sold out until this date, we end up burning 50% of all available packs. We already burned 20% !
