My, My, My - Using Mycelic Morphoid in Battle!

This week's Share Your Battle challenge features Mycelic Morphoid! This is a card that doesn't play a huge role on the battlefield, but will often still be useful due to its efficiency and cost. In fact, Mycelic Morphoid sees enough play from me that I decided to pick up a gold foil version of it even though I am still working on obtaining some levelled up Earth summoners.

Mycelic Morphoid's main selling point (at least for me!) it its cost - it's only a single point of mana to bring into battle. At level 1 you just get your basic cannon fodder - a single point of melee damage and speed, to go with 2 health. If you level it up to level 3 then it does gain Thorns, which lets it counter-hit a bit.

If you wanted to jump right to the action, the Battle Link is right here. Want to hear some more about the lineup? Read on further!

Mycelic Morphoid is in the Earth splinter and fits into most Earth lineups. So this reulset was a good one to toss in Mycelic Morphoid because it was a good one for Earth - a highish mana cap, and Back to Basics to ensure that my back line won't get picked off by any tricky indirect damage.

Mycelic Morphoid is in the Earth splinter and we're going with a Earth summoner. I decided to go with Obsidian because I was thinking of going with a magic lineup. With Back to Basics my magic attack monsters can pile on the damage from behind the safety of my frontline tanks, and Obsidian will help them to hit that much harder.

I started my team with some tanks to soak up damage to buy some time for my magic back line, and hopefully dish out a bit of damage to help along the way. Unicorn Mustang is a great all-around tank - 10 health paired with 4 speed means that it can soak up a lot of hits! Unfortunately due to Back to Basics its Void ability is nullified, it it's still a big body to help hold the front. Mycelic Morphoid fit into my team because I has an extra mana to spare, and I put it in to hopefully soak up another attack and stall some more for the back portion of my lineup. As you may notice, I made the decision to pick up a gold foil version of this bad boy - even if it won't get Thorns on account of my low level summoner, it still gets me a DEC bonus if I happen to win.

My midline brought even more beef - Nectar Queen and Mycelic Slipspawn both bring a hefty 10 health. Nectar Queen hits hard as an extra bonus, with a sky-high 4 melee damage. I stuck her a little further back in my lineup because I was hoping that by the time she was at the front, the enemy damage output would be lower and she would have more time to get some attacks in. Mycelic Slipspawn gets an already respectable 2 magic damage boosted to 3 thanks to Obsidian, and adds to the bulk protecting my back monsters.

I finished up my lineup with some more magic damage. Regal Peryton has decent durability with 6 HP. Goblin Psychic normally stands in as a top-notch healer, but due to Back to Basics, I brought it as solely a 2 point magic attacker for this battle.
Similarly to Mycelic Slipspawn, both of these guys get their damage output boosted by Obsidian.

With the lineup set, it's off into battle! When I see the selected teams I am not sure what to think. My opponent and I have both decided to bring lineups heavy on magic damage. My opponent has made a curious decision to stick one of their magic attackers closer to the front sandwiched between their two tanks, which could work to my advantage. However, they did bring 4 magic attackers, compared to my 3. We'll just have to see how it turns out, on to the battle!

The first round of the battle is a slugfest. Heavy blows are exchanged and the Unicorn Mustangs on both sides go down. My Mycelic Morphoid does an admirable job of tanking and soaks up a 3 point blast from my opponent's Goblin Psychic - that's 3 health that is saved my Nectar Queen!

Over the next two rounds, more magic damage gets exchanged and both of us have 3 monsters left entering round 4. It's looking like it's going to be a photo finish!

Two rounds later and we have nearly arrived to the finish - as you can see, it did indeed turn out to be a squeaker. But my team managed to just barely pull it off! The closeness of the finish shows us just how important Mycelic Morphoid can be - in many battles, a single attack can make the difference at the end. And again, if you wanted to see the whole battle for yourself, you can see it right here.

My strategy for this battle worked for the win, if just barely - my tanks and collection of bulky monsters were able to delay for just long enough for my magic damage to finish off my opponent's lineup. Mycelic Morphoid didn't play the largest role in this battle, but it did tank a crucial hit early on in order to help buy time for the rest of my monsters.

Perhaps more importantly, my gold foil version meant that I got a bonus 10% DEC from my victory! Outside of its in-battle utility, Mycelic Morphoid is one of the cheaper gold foils and a great way to boost your potential ranked play winnings. I consider myself a fan - Mycelic Morphoid has seen a lot of play from me so far, and will continue to do so going forward - and it'll be even better once I get my Obsidian leveled up!
