Splinterlands Diary: The Dark Side of Renting

avatar

Renting is a system very beneficial to the players of Splinterlands especially players (new and old) that didn't invest a lot of money in the game.

With renting, it's possible for players to fight in the higher league. Of course to fight above the Silver League, the amount of DEC needed was definitely not small.

For example to get into the Gold League, one needed to spend hundreds, and if one want to be competitive in the aforementioned league, thousands of DEC a day. Definitely far from cheap.

(The above cards are just two of the cards I needed to re-rent because some a-hole decided to cancel my rent -- dropping me from Bronze I to Bronze II)

Of course, very few players would spend that much just to get to the Gold League and above. Most players would simply choose to stay in the Silver League were the amount of DEC needed was very affordable.

But if you're renter like, there's one thing that you must be aware of. And that's the fact that the player renting you the cards you needed to stay in your chosen league could cancel the rent without prior notice.

Yes, the great renting system that benefited a lot of players also have a darker side to it. And this is something that we have to watch for.

One of the reasons, and most often the only reason that some player would suddenly cancel the rent of the cards they're renting to other players was money.

As you probably know by now, the rate of buying and renting cards usually goes up the closer we are to the end of the season. And some players that had already rented their cards out would sometimes cancel the rent to maximize their profit.

Such behavior from these players are definitely annoying and have some negative impact to players renting their cards.

One of these negative effects was the lost of key cards that they use to win battles. Of course that was just a minor annoyance. But what's not a minor annoyance though was when one drops a league. For example, from Silver III to Bronze I.

If the drop happened a day or several hours before the season ends then it's not a big deal. But if the drop happened in the last minutes of the season and you're not online then it becomes a big deal.

It's no secret that the higher your league was after the season ends the more loot chests that you'll be able to open and the higher your chance of getting good cards.

So you could probably imagine the annoyance when you're league dropped because some unscrupulous players suddenly decided to cancel your rent just before the season ends.

The thing about this though was that you could still use the cancelled cards for 24 hours which might be have been created to protect players from such an event. Sadly, coincidence is a strange thing. If the 24 hour buffer period ended minutes before the end of the season and you haven't noticed then you're screwed.

Such event might seemed unlikely to happen but it's not out of the realm of the possibilities.

The best way to prevent such an unlikely event from ever happening to you was to rent a day or two before the end of the season. Moreover, it's also advised that you rent more than the minimum Collection Power of the league you're planning to stay on.

And that's that. Before I end the article though I would just like to ask: Have you experienced your rent cancelled in the most inappropriate time?

Thanks for reading.
