Something that newer players often don't understand is the order in which they should level up their cards—whether to focus on rarity or card type. They constantly wonder what the correct and optimal way to do this is. Well, there are indeed several ways to optimize this process, since you need to follow a certain order of priorities to ensure your deck doesn't become unbalanced. After all, having balanced sets is everything, since that allows us to compete on equal footing with our opponents, depending on the game mode we’re playing.

Whether you're playing ranked matches, tournaments, or Brawl battles, everything requires a specific order. For example, the most important part of a deck starts with your "Archon/Summoner," since it determines the level of the cards you can use on the battlefield. so, no matter what you’re playing, you must take that specific order into account, because if you don’t do it correctly, imbalance sets in, and if resources are limited (Capital), you may see a stagnation in progression.

That’s why I’ve written this post—so you can understand the correct order in which to level up your cards. So, be sure to read all the way to the end, especially if you’re new to the game.

Understanding "Rarities" in Splinterlands

To get started in Splinterlands, rarities are divided into four categories. I imagine most of you already know this, but since my job as a content creator is to walk you through the process step by step and explain the concepts surrounding the ecosystem, so let’s start with the basics, then move on to intermediate and/or advanced topics. Ultimately, each of these rarities affects the player’s budget, and if you don’t know the order in which to level up those cards—and have no idea about rarities—you’ll run into a lot of complications. So the idea is to make that journey much easier.

Now that we've cleared that up, let's move on to explaining the oddities:

Explanation of the Oddities

  • Commons: Basically, these are the least rare cards of all, so there are far more of them in circulation than cards of other rarities. This means their market price is much lower, and they are therefore the easiest to obtain. However, leveling them up requires hundreds of copies of that card, but they are much more cost-effective.

  • Rares: This is the rarity tier above Common but below the rest. Of course, the number of cards needed to level them up is much lower than for Common cards; approximately 115 copies are required, compared to the more than 500 copies needed for Common cards. The cost of these cards is moderate; some of the more useful ones are more expensive, while others are more affordable, but they are generally accessible and very useful on the battlefield.

  • Epics: Here we’re entering more exclusive territory, as these cards are much rarer than the previous ones and are surpassed in rarity only by the next tier. They require far fewer copies than rare cards—around 46—which means the effort involved is less. However, because there are fewer of them in circulation, they’re much more expensive, not to mention that many of them have very powerful abilities, which further drives up their cost.

  • Legendary: These are the rarest of all cards; they require only 11 copies of the same card. Supply is very limited, but the cards’ value is extremely high, since they are not only assets with very low supply but also highly useful, which triples their value. However, there are some exceptions to this rule, but this is the general pattern.

Note: There is another tier of cards, but it isn’t a different rarity—it’s a completely different type of card, distinct from regular cards and “Golden” cards. To level them up, regardless of their rarity, you need far fewer cards than you would for regular cards; however, because they have a golden border or frame, their price doubles at every level.

The Best Order to Level Them Up (Step by Step)

Generally, new players tend to try to upgrade the rarest and most expensive cards, which is a mistake, since the idea is to follow a logical order that allows us to balance a card’s cost (its value) with its usefulness on the battlefield. So, with that in mind, the goal is to maximize the resources we have to achieve balance—as I mentioned at the beginning. That’s why my recommendation and the way you should start is as follows:

Logical order

  • The Archons (Highest Priority): To start leveling up any other unit you want, the first thing you need to do is level up your Archon, which determines the level of the card on the battlefield. This means that even if you have a legendary card at the maximum level (Level 4), but your “Archon” is at Level 1, you won’t be able to play it at its full potential. Therefore, the first step is to level up your summoners.

  • Common and Rare Cards (The Foundation of the Deck): For me, these rare cards are the cornerstone of what your deck could become, since they help you start building your “Collection Power” and also improve your win rate in the lower leagues—all while staying consistent. This not only helps with what I just mentioned, but also with the “cost-benefit” ratio, since you’ll likely have vital support abilities, such as “Tank Heal, Heal,” etc. Although there are also some very good offensive cards.

  • Epic Cards: I’d say this is the next tier of cards you should level up, since you already have a solid foundation in the two previous rarities. It’s best to invest in and/or level up cards that give you control on the board. There are many I could mention, but the idea is that you should have offensive cards and control abilities like “Silence,” “Rust,” etc. These cards have excellent stats, are very powerful, and can give you a significant advantage on the field.

  • Legendary Cards: For me, this is the final step in leveling up, since it requires a greater investment. Generally speaking, almost all of these cards are very good, powerful, and versatile, but because of their price, they can easily throw your budget off balance. That’s why following this plan step by step is key.

Conclusion

So, if you want to start leveling up your cards but don’t know how to do it, you should follow the steps I outline in this post. It’s the most logical and professional way to go about it, especially if you don’t have a lot of capital. If you do have capital, following this order isn’t strictly necessary, but it wouldn’t be very efficient.

So, what do you think of this information? Does it make sense to focus on the rarer cards to level up your deck in a balanced way? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Archons first and then neutrals/dragons. Those are the cards that get the most play and have the most versatility.
