Wow what a hectic time for you! I had no idea this even occurred in Nigeria. It sounds just unfair and extortionist in nature. I am not surprised you left your ATM card behind in the machine. You are lucky that no one used your card! We have issues like that in South Africa where fraudsters will actually tamper with ATMs to get them to swallow your card on purpose, and since your pin is already in, as soon as you turn your back they empty your account!
That being said, I have done that before and made similar silly mistakes. Absolutely, one should not take action when in fight or flight mode. The logical part of our brain shuts down and all our energy is diverted to a primal instinct to survive.
I was lucky to have the security detail at the bank who retrieved the cards and kept with the marketers in the bank.
Oh that's so lucky! There are still some good people on this planet. Sometimes the security guards are in on it, but I'm glad to hear that wasn't the case here <3
