Soulkeep: the Tower Defense that will surprise you!

A few hours ago I started playing the Beta version of Soulkeep, the new game of the Splinterlands ecosystem, with a Tower Defense theme. The objective of the game is simple: kill the enemy hordes before they can break through the tower defenses. The towers are thus the tools the player can use to bring down the dark witch and her vile creatures, but the game also requires strategy, not just power.

Each map consists of a creepy path: at one end the hordes of enemies begin their attack, at the other end are the magical portals to be safeguarded. In between are possible positions that towers can occupy, each of which has different characteristics and attacks. In the beta so far I've used:

  • Gloom Owl: the tower shoots arrows at the enemy, the attack speed is low and the damage is also minimal but the towers are upgraded by accumulating Cost, obtained from killing monsters.

  • Tarantula Loom: Attack even slower than Gloom Owl but has a slow effect on opponents, so it might be a good strategy to flank both towers on the map

  • Charnel Pit: the tower has a very fast attack speed, with even less damage but a larger attack surface, so it also hits multiple enemies at once. The interesting strategy is to combine it with other more performing towers for a successful combination.

Like all Tower Defense games, the player will be defeated in the end! The fun and strategy is to delay defeat as much as possible. In the Beta version there are no rewards but in the official one the longer the defeat is delayed and the greater the prizes will be. The strategy will therefore consist in upgrading the towers to increase the attack power and increase the Cost to upgrade them.

The player will have spells at his disposal that can be deployed along the way to increase the chance of repelling the enemy hordes. Some of these spells will be obtained by passing levels, others will be purchasable from the shop.

Finally there will be heroes that will increase the power of towers and spells, offer additional benefits for players and are upgradeable, just like Splinterlands cards. The game is therefore really very funny, I have repeated the same level several times so it won't be simple but it is very stimulating. The official version of the game could still present further updates in this regard and the staking of the cards, as well as the presence of the heroes, should greatly facilitate the speed of overcoming the levels, at least in the initial phase.

Still positive feedback also for the sound of the videogame, perfect for the theme of the game, that kind of mystical music that adds a bit of right suspense. Everything from the graphics to the music reminds me a bit of Tim Burton, I'm sure he was an inspiration to the developers.

Finally, the graphics are really very very nice, initially I feared the worst with the release of the first images but I admit that the more I play Soulkeep, the more I really like everything! It will be necessary to wait a little longer for the official version but if these are the conditions, I'm sure we can expect a lot of satisfaction! Even new players will enjoy the game and attract many new users!
