SPS Governance Proposal - Halt Alpha Tournaments

Community Proposal #11

There is an ongoing attempt to reform tournaments and give the DAO the opportunity to clearly apportion rewards, outline formats and prize structures, as well as to establish a consensus for entry guidelines. This process will take time and require many great minds from our community to work together and find solutions.

A suggestion to pause all tournaments for 2 months and then double rewards for 2 months while building consensus was not well received and I subsequently had several messages and requests to make a proposal to halt Alpha tournaments. After taking a poll to see how much support this idea had in the Discord community, it's clear we need a stake-weighted vote.

If this proposal passes, all Alpha tournaments will be halted until we can build a passing proposal on how to apportion Tournament rewards. Here is the current breakdown of rewards distribution that has led us to this point:

Many view the Alpha tournaments have become more problematic since Land 1.5 was released. There are now less participants and a large portion of Tournament inflation is allocated to these tournaments which only a handful of people qualify to join. Overall we need a comprehensive rework of Tournaments. This proposal aims to be a form of mitigation while that rework continues to be drafted.

As far as motivation to reach a consensus on how to rework Tournaments, halting Alpha tournaments along with the amount of rewards that are not being distributed as they should be and the existence of "refund tier" prizes means that somewhere between 30-40% of the rewards that should be allocated to tournaments would be left unapportioned until we pass a vote.

My hope is that whether this proposal passes or not, we can start making progress on building consensus for a comprehensive tournament reform proposal to make sure that we're accurately awarding prizes as per the whitepaper's indications. Thanks for your time and consideration.

For posterity I'm attaching the results of the poll:

Alpha had their chance to make some common sense reforms to limit the payouts, but if they don't want to compromise, I'm all for a hard stop until consensus is reached for the new tournament funds allotments. Big vote for the pause!

I more see lack of consensus on anti alpha front. Even I am not playing alpha Tournies anymore i support alpha but happy to reduce payouts as many others as well.

There is almost unilateral consensus that alpha is getting too big a share of rewards and it needs to be scaled back. The lack of consensus has been for the RF/GF splits as well as a rejection of the proposed "classic" tournament format.

You will quickly see how much of the community stands against 20% of all tournament value going towards alpha-only tournaments.

I don't currently play in alpha tournaments and I think alpha rewards definitely need adjusted, but halting only alpha tournaments to force a resolution doesn't seem fair. The whole community needs to come to an agreement here, so it would be better to put the hurt on everyone to help reach that agreement.
Pausing all tournaments would make everyone incentivized to come to an agreement.
Pausing only alphas is just being mean and heavy handed against a minority group.

I'll be very disappointed in our community if this passes. Try to imagine yourself in the place of an alpha holder, and "Do to others as you would have them do to you."

We can come to an acceptable solution without the use of bullying.

(Edited)

you act as if alpha owners are excluded from the game. but that's not right, because they can participate in all other tournaments and continue to play normally like everyone else. suspending an advantage and thus putting everyone on the same level is not bullying.

maybe we should also mention that the person who worked on the distribution plan is the biggest beneficiary of this distribution. speaking of kindness and fairness.....

Please fix Alpha GF 17% to a lower number. Maybe you are already on a different draft, in that case share when finished. And edit this text.

Azircon, this is simply a table to show where we are at now with the current numbers of tournament payouts so people can make an informed decision about the alpha halt.

This chart is in no way a recommendation of where we should be in terms of creating consensus for the new tournament distribution. I think clayboyn is just trying to show where we are for the sake of this pause, and making that a separate issue from reworking the tournament structure entirely.

To be clear, I've never played in a single Alpha tournament and I don't intend to play in one any time soon.
I also do think that Alpha tournaments receive too much payout compared to other formats and, more importantly, that the tournament structure overall needs a rework.

With that out of the way, only halting Alpha tournaments feels like an unfair blow towards a minority because they are the easy target.

Either halt all tournaments or halt none!

Feel the same here. I'd be fine with 2 months of no rewards. The n 2 months of 2X rewards.
