DAO Sponsored Preproposal #1d

Please Note:

It seems that not everyone is aware of how the preproposal process works. In effort to avoid any confusion, please make sure to review this proposal for any changes before voting for it in the final voting round. This is to ensure that you still support the proposal after any changes that have been made during the preproposal process while working to build consensus.

Welcome everyone, we're going to be trying something slightly different for the Tournament rework proposals. As we don't have a multiple choice proposal system, we'll be running multiple linked preproposals. The preproposal with the highest stake weighted support after the 7 day preproposal period will advance to a full vote and have a chance to be ratified by the SPS DAO.

The purpose of this proposal is to outline what Tournament formats the DAO would like to Sponsor going forward. After extensive discussions and polling in the Community Discord server, 5 options for potential tournament formats have been chosen to present to the SPS DAO.

Option D is based on a draft request from @mondroid.

Instead of following the traditional method of Alpha, Wild, and Modern tournaments I would like to propose the idea of creating tournaments based on combining card blocks / sets.

There would be four tournaments overall and the reward pool would be split in a way that favors the newest sets to encourage continued investment into the game.

The types of tournaments and their portion of the reward pool would be

Rebellion + Chaos Legion = 35%
Rebellion + Untamed = 25%
Rebellion + Alpha / Beta = 15%
LEGACY (No Modern Cards) = 5%
All Cards (Wild) = 20%

Why Rebellion in everything? (except Legacy)

The team’s ability to pay the bills and keep the lights on comes almost exclusively from pack sales so the general idea is to make the newest set, in this case Rebellion, crucial for competitive tournament play by giving it access to every type of tournament that isn't Legacy.

The DAO also receives 50% of each pack sale so it’s in our best interest to make Rebellion packs as appealing as possible to encourage sales and continue to grow the DAO for future needs.

Setting up tournaments this way (assuming a set is in the store for at least 12 months) means each set will have it's highest earning potential early on making it attractive to new players then slowly tapers off as time goes on to encourage buying into the newest set.

Paying out the highest tournament prizes to the oldest sets like we have been for Alpha and Wild is not a sustainable business model nor one that is appealing to new players.

How is This Different Than Modern and Wild?

Rebellion + Chaos Legion is essentially the same as modern, however, one problem we are facing is how cheap and effective Chaos Legion is and currently you can use it in everything besides alpha tournaments to carry the load.

By doing it this way, you can't rely on any one set to access all the tournaments, except the newest set that we are trying to sell. Other sets will still have utility in their pairing with the newest edition set, in this case Rebellion.

Additionally, since Modern cards can be played in Wild, creating a Legacy format exlusively for old cards gives them their own tournament.

What Does the Future Look Like?

6th Edition + Rebellion = 35%
6th Edition + Chaos Legion = 25%
6th Edition + Untamed = 15%
LEGACY (No Modern Cards)= 5%
All Cards (Wild) = 20%

This set of proposals is one piece of a comprehensive Tournament reform. There will be future proposals that address Rewards percentage by format, regular foil and gold foil split, and potentially other issues that could be discovered throughout this process. Those will each be presented in a similar fashion for DAO approval.
