Splinterlands Diary: Learning from Other Players

Hello Hive gaming community! I learned a few tricks on playing Splinterlands daily. At first it was difficult and I always lose even if I have the same cards as my opponents. I felt bad, we have the same cards, why do I always lose!? I replayed battles and saw how teams worked and why I lost. I started copying and listing down what cards my opponents use and that was the time I begin winning. Not all battles are won but my results got improved.

A sample of my list. It doesn't work 100% but I don't always lose now.

I play how my opponents played and copied their techniques in my battles. I'll show some of the tricks I learned.

25 Mana Battle

Ruleset

  • Now you see me: All units have Camouflage (Cannot be directly targeted unless in the first position).

  • Rise of commons: Only common and rare monsters may be used in battles. Note: Summoners are unaffected by this rule.

For 25 mana, the element was not on my list. I only have Earth and Death so I copied what my other opponents do. I thought it was stupid putting Spellmonger in front but I lose to this technique often so I copied it in this battle.

Featured Cards

  • Spellmonger - At first it I don't like to use this but now I appreciate this trick. It looks weak but really it attacks indirectly. It has to be attacked first for the trick to work then it will return the attack. A cool trick.

  • Frankarsgard

  • Chaos Furybringer

Notice that we almost use the same cards, both Fire element. My little change in position killed his Frankrsgard first. Another difference was he used a ranged unit whereas I used melee in the last position. When it came to one on one in the finals his unit cannot attack.

Up Close & Personal

I prefer Fire element because I have a gold archon, already level 2. I often use it in Up Close & Personal ruleset but I also lose. I learned it's better to use Life element because they have thick armor that adds defense.

Ruleset

image.png

  • Deflection Shield: All units have Reflection Shield (0 damage from Blast splash damage and Punishment abilities—Corrosive Ward, Magic Reflect, Return Fire, and Thorns).

  • Up Close & Personal: Only monsters with melee attacks can be used. Note: Monsters with 2 types of attacks can be used as long as they have a melee attack as well. An example would be War Chaang.

Featured Cards

image.png

  • Twice Yester Knight

  • New Beluroc Aegis - attracts attacks

  • Great Bear Druid - can attack with magic

  • Sherringham Logger - can attack from far away

  • Vengeful Monk - can attack from far away

  • Kanaaq Miner - can attack from far away

We used the same element and the same cards so I don't know whether I did anything special to win. It could be just be luck but the point is I will lose if I used Fire again.

Don't Underestimate Cards, Every Card Has Uses

There are cards with no attacks like Spellmonger. At first I don't appreciate them but they are useful in other rulesets.

Ruleset

image.png

  • Briar Patch: All monsters receive the Thorns ability at the start of the battle. Enemy monsters that use melee attacks receive damage back. Damage returned is equal to damage of the attacker divided by 2, rounded up. Note: Melee attack monsters with the Reflection Shield ability do not take damage from thorns. Note: The Amplify ability increases damage.

  • Counterspell: All units have magic reflect (returns 50% of magic damage to attacker).

The ruleset penalize use of melee and magic units. Only ranged units are not punished.

Featured Cards

  • Scales of Justice - A card specific for the ruleset. It has good defense and speed that makes it dodge attacks.

  • Grand Consul Minion - A ranged card with one attack.

  • Ash Archer - A two attack ranged card.

  • Sturdy Axe Warden - Another two attack ranged unit.

There are no melee and magic in my cards. All ranged units were used so that they will have no penalty from attacking. Scales of Justice contributed in this battle by soaking and dodging attacks.
