Carrion Cannon Fodder: First Impressions

This week we will be looking at the gnarled Carrion Shade (a 1 cost spacer with 2hp 2 spd and 1 melee attack at lvl 1). In Splinterlands these sort of spacer characters can serve as key wedges for victory or factor into your demise (furious chicken keeping kron from last standing is one such example of spacers being a wrench in the gears). Carrion Shade appears to be similar to Slimball from last season, the only key difference being that at later lvls this card gets flying instead of redemption. Any one cost spacer with an attack that has flying is worth considering in your spellbook for any Splinter.

Strategy and Placement

The carrion shade is good fodder IN ANY POSITION similar to a chicken etc.
In the battle located here I placed Carrion Shade as a spacer in position 1. This fight was in fact a battle of the cannon fodder, both lineups are riddled with low cost fodder. My enemy also was utilizing various spacer characters (Undead Priest, Furious Chicken etc.). Both me and my opponent used magic damage, but his was divided between 2 locations due to Death Elemental's snipe ability. Ancient lich focused his 2 damage to the front which gradually pulled the enemy forward into his lethal barrage.

Each card was granted 2 armor so an array of cannon fodder benefited me and my opponent to a substantial degree. Each round both I and my enemy remove the various buffer cards protecting the backline until only our magical damage dealers remain.

This match was a nail biter, Ancient lich only survives by a point of health or two in the final round. Without life leech or the amount of fodder utilized I would have been defeated, an excellent match and an excellent lineup from my opponent.

Talking Tidbits: Scavenging Shade

Lorewise the Carrion Shade is a scavenging bird creature similar to a vulture that feasts upon the corpses of the fallen. To see one is to know death is near. This creature while being a scavenging creature in lore, is not a scavenger in game. It does fly like a bird, but aside from that it appears this card has no lore-related abilities aside from that. The bones and it's plumage are eerie and this creature serves a vital part of the ecosystem in the Splinterlands.

This card strategically is an excellent spacer with flying, and while offers no retaliatory damage like redemption or additional abilities. This card gains higher speed and flying at later lvls, meaning it can be a fervent dodger of physical attacks. In the wake of modern, this card is likely to see much greater play in the modern format AND wild format. It is likely that both pools will reward well, but standard will have greater bot saturation.
