Card Impressions: Earth's Taunt Tank

Greeting Splinterlanders and welcome to another strategy post. Today we will be talking about the slipspawn. One of my FAVORITE cards for earth, especially at later levels. This card is a great taunt card for Obsidian, and works particularly well against LARGE UNITS WITH 5 OR MORE ATTACK. Aside from that it is a decent damage attractor in most cases.

This card also is one of the only taunt cards in the game PERIOD and should not be neglected in building for modern or wild.

Strategy And Placement: Double Edged Sword

This card is a bit of a double edged sword to place. You want to split the opponent's damage to 1rst position rarely works. In my fight located here you can see why first position failed vs back position slipspawn placement.

The opponent ended up FOCUSING FIRE into their position 1 tank, and causing him to die very rapidly. Meanwhile out lineup sustains SPLIT damage and takes the enemy easily. It should be noted that orc sergeant would've attacked the frontline only REGARDLESS due to having reach (his inspire buff was also very valuable in this engagement.

The enemy also used kinjo to negate blast. However, due to the poorly positioned slipspawn kinjo was brought to the front rather quickly. Kinjo being the obvious choice next to slipspawn in this ruleset for both players.

Meta Musings: Jacek bait?

This card will see a bit more value after Riftwatchers comes into play. All of the leaks hint at large creatures with massive attack and mana cost. All those attacks get reduced to 1 damage with slipsapwns forcefield, making him a potentially desirable tank for the upcoming meta. This card will be countered by Jacek, but will serve great utility against pretty much any other summoner.

Currently there aren't many taunt creatures, but there are counters to taunt (like scattershot and reach) aswell. This card I would consider a staple in the upcoming meta for earth. Not something you bring out every match but will serve a KEY role in many lineups.

Talking Tidbits: Lore n' Stuff

In game lore excerpt is as follows:

"Mycelic Slipspawn was first found on the edges of the swamps of Praetoria, in areas where the fetid waters meet with the forests and jungles. It is highly toxic and grows to a substantial size. Death is uncommon for those who touch its fibrous body however, the side effects of its toxins can cause a long list of illnesses and disease, leaving its victims severely debilitated.

When the chaos portal opened and the creeping plague infected the land, the Slipspawn struggled to endure, being completely intolerant to the deadly pandemic. But then Queen Mycelia came, she touched the Slipspawn as she passed it by and it drank from her power, an enduring energy that ran deep and defiantly cast the pestilence of the chaos taint aside. The Slipspawn pulled its roots free from the ground and eagerly danced across the leafy forest floor after her, desperate to follow its saviour and stand by her in the times to come."

The lore to this and all of the mushroom folk is rather interesting and by far one of the more developed races lore-wise in Splinterlands. There is the mushroom seer, sproceror, mycelic infantry, and queen mycelia herself to compliment this interesting race of creatures. I eagerly look forward to the next mycelic creatures coming in RW and beyond.
