It’s nice not to be alone

Being a noob in splinterlands is a lot harder than it used to be. When I watch videos on how to progress through the ranks, there are some strategies, but mostly renting or buying cards. — problem. What was once cheap had sky rocketed and even joining a league is nigh impossible. There are no packs to purchase as well as anything else in the store. It’s like there is a giant step in front of the nooob, which is impossible to pass with off as incredible amount of $$.

Even the daily quests rewards are really low. For over a week every day I’ve gotten by a few coins, only.

Recently, I was pinned to a post relating this problem to squidgames by @salamera. I thought it was beautiful and worthy of sharing.

I've been playing the game for over a year so I know it pretty well. I started a new account trying to see how it would be as free to play and escaping Bronze III was pretty much impossible with the starter cards. Every deck has a counter so while I won about 50% that meant I would forever be stuck as I'd gain as much rank as I lost.

To advance you need an edge. For me it was a Lvl 2 Bortus (-1 magic summoner) and Lvl 3 Sea Serpent (regeneration). Those two cards alone got me to Bronze I fairly easily. So, I rented for one day and battled a LOT to get to Bronze I rating (900+) although I was still just Bronze II (not enough power) then just battled a little every day to get my daily rewards.

I still lost about half the time but my rating was high enough from my one day rental that I always got rewards from fights. Averaged about 10DEC per day which was better than no reward in bronze III.

Overall though new players are in a tough spot. Without renting or buying you will never meet the power requirement to rank up.
