How Much Data Can Your Brain Store?

avatar

A human brain has about 1 billion neurons. Whenever you think of your dog, car, home, parents, etc., different groups of neurons become active. Each neuron forms about 1,000 connections to other neurons and helps with multiple memories at a time.

Unlike a computer that stores information as 0s and 1s, brain cells use 26 different ways to store data by firing 26 different-sized synapses to code information. This exponentially increases the brain’s storage capacity which is more than 1 million Gigabytes.

If we had a PC with the same processing power and memory that would require 1 gigawatt of power to function. Basically an entire nuclear power station to run it. Surprisingly, our brain does it with just 20 watts. This makes me wonder in the future we could use human brain to store large amounts of data.
