Back to Basics with Explosive Weaponry makes for a fast game

This Weeks challenge will really get your brains working as you have to forget all of your normal strategies and think in a totally different way as the monsters will lose all their abilities and it is easy to forget this when you put your team together.

Read on for a Battle strategy I will reason as to why I selected the cards that I did

Play This Ruleset

The Battle Mage Secrets Weekly Challenge is back in action, and the theme I am highlighting is: - Back to Basics my goto team will not work as the Death splinter is not playable and they are my favourite for this ruleset.

Things to Consider

  • Make sure you have lots of health so that you can soak up the attacks from the opponents, I would say that health points are more important than armour as if your enemy fires magic this will go straight to your health points, this is why we both picked the Kelp Initiate up front.
  • The Second is to get a lot of firepower and try to overwhelm your opponent, don't forget that things like sneak or snipe will not help as all abilities are gone, Try to have all your team fire at least once before they die.
  • This is the one point I fell short on and that was speed, I was slow off the blocks and took fire first, remember speed is important
  • Select your summoner very carefully as in this ruleset his abilities will still work and aid your team in battle

Team Structure Balance Or Single Skill

In every battle you will be faced with this decision and only you can tell based on your experience what the best option is, what do I mean by this? Well do you select every monster in your lineup having the same attack or do you break it up and have multiple attack methods?.

Personally, I like to spread my attacks over the different methods, melee - magic and range, this is so that if your opponent has applied some limiting power you have other attacks that are going to hit full force.

I went with mixed team and decided to put the Kelp Initiate in front in second spot went to Halving Alchemist only as he is low mana and has one armour - I was looking to block a ranged attack.

In this battle, I do the balanced method and my opponent goes all in on magic, see what is the deciding factor.

SPOILER: it was neither - there was another factor that decided the win and the battle made it obvious

Battle Details

You're looking at one of the toughest rule sets I have seen for a long time, Explosive Weaponry, Back to Basics and Keep your Distance Kind of low Mana at only 24 and Two Splinters to choose from Water and Earth.

So very slim selection of cards, straight away we can exclude all melee cards, so it is magic or range

It was all in on magic for my opponent and as he had Alric Stormbringer he get a plus one to all magic monsters, I was trying to hedge my bets with split team magic and range, and my Bortus effectively cancelled out his magic attack bonus. We both picked kelp initiate as Tank Card, the same thinking would be because of the high health and low mana.

How Did The Battle Play Out?

Well it was not that exciting to watch, it was over quite fast, I took round one I would say as my kelp was still standing and his Kelp was dead, but round two was my downfall, both of my range shooters missed and that is the luck of the draw and the benefit of speed in this game. This is the way.

Learning Points

As a player, you will learn a lot more from your losing battles than your winners, so what's the big lesson from this battle? Do not underestimate the speed of your monsters both Djinn Oshannus and Mischievous Mermaid had a speed advantage over me and got their shots off first and thus eliminating one of my team before he could fire.

As frustrating as losses are, they do teach us a lot. I like to play a few games before I do my brawls for this reason. The tougher the opponents the better, because they'll show me where I'm messing up.

Yup, totally agree, I can’t help but wonder how the match might have played out if I didn’t have those two misses in round two.
