The Ups and Downs of Splinterlands: A Personal Journey

My Splinterlands Journey

I have been playing splinterlands for a long time now, not from the very beginning, but very close. I first got spellbook with beta edition and at that time for the price of the spellbook, you now own the complete set of starter cards summoners, and monsters all yours. Such a bargain looking back on it now.

I had no idea how the game worked or how to battle. I was also pretty new to the hive. So this was a big learning experience, that I jumped into. Thankfully I did find some helpful posts that explained things, but still very complicated.

Logging support tickets with the team for various technical issues was answered by Matt himself at that time. We are going back to April 2019, splinterlands was not even one year old if I remember correctly.

First Anniversary

The game has now taken off moving from a small side project into a real business the founder, Matt and Aggy's announcement was:-

We are a business with four full-time employees and about 15 part-time team members!

I was still very new and learning more and more. Then came the anniversary promotion, which is to celebrate one year and also the recent launch of the DEC token, Buy beta packs and receive free Essence Orbs. Remember them.

Kickstarter Campaign

This started just over four years ago from the date of this post. It was the promotion of the untamed set and also a big push to get funding to continue working on the game, much-needed capital to push on with the software development and to fund all the servers to run the game.

So sure I had to pledge to this Kickstarter as the bonuses were so good, I didn't fully understand how good as I was still very new to the game. Do you have a Chain Golem? This was the bonus that pushed me to increase my pledge.

What did I get?

Eleven level 1 regular foil cards are enough to make a maxed level monster plus one gold foil card. I still own all of these cards they must have a special place in my collection because trust me I have sold so many other gold and regular legendaries over the time I don't even want to think about it now. Much too painful to recall.

The Next Milestone

Now the dust has settled. We battle with all our beta cards and the new untammed set, this is still a big leap forward for the casual player like me. I don't spend a lot of time keeping up with all the latest developments, it's very easy for things to overtake you as it did for me, I was just figuring out how to add the new cards into my battles, and then boom.

My head was spinning, do I need even more cards to add to my collection, probably not. I am still struggling to figure out the best teams for the cards I have. We have been spoiled I think by how fast new features we being rolled out, some players got overwhelmed and still some pushed all in on splinterlands. I call these guys the visionaries.

What was next

Splinterlands Land Sale

This was my biggest regret of not getting in on the sale, but not a big deal I have done ok with the little that I have. Sometimes you get lucky and hit the jackpot, but I am very cautious with my spending and never go in big on any crypto project, or any investment for that matter.

Sound Advice.

The danger is that it could all go to zero and you have to push in your rent money, well we are all happy now that after a long long time, Landowners can finally start to play this fascinating aspect of this game.

Final Thoughts

Will I continue with splinterlands, recently I have seen people, players, that I know in real life throw in the towel so to speak, selling all their cards and Splinterland assets and moving on with life. Personally, as I have mentioned above I have not pushed in a great amount to the game so I have not a massive amount of assets, therefore there is not a need to take my money out as I don't have that much to take out. Plus I enjoy playing and competing in the ladders and brawls.
