Holy Moly, Is Nightmare Still a Meta Monster After All This Time? (And Why My Opponents Keep Punching Air)

Time for another Splinterlands Social Media Challenge post. And believe me, getting this thing out of my head and onto the page is always a battle in itself – too many thoughts, too little coherent brain space. But as I was trying to figure out what to muse about between tournament rounds, an old, reliable pain in my opponents' backside came to mind. I played some ranked battles to test out my Nightmare strategy. And it hit me. Like, full force. Nightmare.

Yeah, that Nightmare. The OG tank that, honestly, I talked about almost two years ago (yeah, I went digging, don’t judge.) Check the archives, if you’re into that kinda thing: "Speed and Melee" – pretty sure I said it back then, and it still holds true as hell now. The guy’s a freaking menace. He can still frustrate the enemy team to the brink of tears as they just keep. Missing. Him. Like, yo! Is that low-energy? Maybe. But is it effective? OBVIOUSLY.

Now, you might be thinking, “Surely, there’s new hotness, new meta monsters.” And yeah, there are. But some things just, stick. And Nightmare, especially when you’re talking max level, is a stubborn mule of a card that just refuses to suck. At level 9, this bad boy gets Blast and Phase, which, okay, cool. But the real nuts part? Seven speed and twelve health. SEVEN SPEED. In a world where hitting anything with decent speed might as well be an act of God, Nightmare is out here playing on easy mode for himself, and super hard mode for everyone else.

And look, I’m not gonna lie, I got a little, extra greedy in a recent battle. I actually put Nightmare up front as the tank. Yeah, I know. Crazy town. But sometimes you just gotta swing for the fences, right? The key was I gave that big dawg a ton of support. We’re talking dodge and resurrect from the Archon – that glorious Astral Entity. And then, because why not be completely gratuitous, another resurrect from Skok Duskblight. All the while, Nightmare’s getting that sweet, sweet healing from Arachne Weaver. Another post about that sneaky spider if you want more: "combo". At max level, Arachne Weaver gets Corrupted Healing, Scavenger, and Poison, which, trust me, is pretty much the best thing since sliced bread for keeping your annoyingly-hard-to-hit tank annoyingly alive.

So how’d it play out, you ask? Well, the enemy came to the battle with some serious heavy hitters, including a very OP gladiator. And bless their determined little hearts, they actually killed Nightmare. Not once, but twice. But guess what? Resurrect brings him back. Twice. And each time he popped back up, he got healed, dodged a whole bunch more shots, and basically just stood there mocking them. We brought home another win. It’s funny because it's completely needless on my part, of course, to keep rubbing it in, but when your opponent watches their entire frontline just flail around like a bunch of drunk puppies trying to hit a greased watermelon, that’s pretty damn annoying. And I’m sure you know the feeling, on either side of that, right? That slow, creeping despair as your carefully crafted assault just, dissipates into thin air because you can't land a damn blow. Pure pathos, baby.

So, yeah. Holy moly, is Nightmare still a meta monster? Apparently so! And my opponents? Still punching air. Bless their hearts. Get these cards. They are OP.
