Splinterlands Stats | Mar 2023 | Transactions, Games, Players and Price

avatar

Splinterlands keeps evolving and developing. There were some recent tweaks again in the game, like fees for rent etc. Let’s see how this has affected the game. The last year was quite bad for the overall industry and it hit the project as well. This years is starting on with some growth but there are still a lot of challenges to be overcome. Land should be finally out in a few months.
Let’s take a look at the numbers!

01.png

The following topics will be covered:

  • Number of transactions
  • Number of games played
  • Number of active daily players
  • New accounts created by Splinterlands
  • SPS price

The period that we will be looking in is 2022 - 2023.

The data has been queried from the Splinterlands API in combination with the data from the Hive blockchain.

Number Of Transactions

Transactions represent the overall activity in the game. Here is the chart.

image001.png

The number of transactions has been quite stable up until recently. In all 2022 during the bear market, the transactions count was between 3M to 4M a day. But since recently we have seem a significant deep and the numbers are now between 2M and 3M.
I guess this is probably due to the new renting system.

Number Of Battles Played

Here is the chart of the daily numbers of games played for the period.

image003.png

There has been a significant drop in the numbers of battles back in 2022. From 12M a day to around 4M a day. There has been an uptrend at the beginning of 2023 with the numbers going up to 6M, then a drop back. Also there is some big drop recently for a few days down to 2M and a fast recovery back to 4M where we are now.

It seems that the change in the rental system has impacted some things around here as well.

Number Of Renting Operations

The number of renting operations has been growing in the last year and at one point there was more renting operations then any other operation on Splinterlands.
Here is the chart.

image005.png

We can see the grow and the big drop that happened recently. Just util February, the numbers for rentals kept growing and reached 1.2M operations per day. While this is less than the numbers for battles and other transactions, all the rental operations are recorded on the blockchain because of their financial nature. They are the most numerous operations that the game records on chain.
Since recently the game introduced a 1 DEC fee for each of these operations and they have now dropped to around 600k per day, that is a reduction in half.

Number Of Active Players

This is one of the most important metrics for every dApp, how many active users have there are. Here is a data for daily active users [DAU].

image009.png

A very sharp drop in June 2022. From 400k to 150k DAUs. This is because of the changes in the reward system and eliminating bots. But since June 2022 the number of DAUs has steadily been growing reaching 250k DAUs in January. But we have another drop and overall volatility in the las weeks, most likely caused again by the change in the renting system.

New Accounts Created by Splinterlands

Here are the new Hive accounts created by Splinterlands on a monthly basis.

image011.png

Splinterlands had an immense numbers of accounts created in the second half od 2021 with the top in September 2021 with 267k accounts created in a month.
In 2022 these numbers are far lower as things has settled down. The number of new accounts created per month kept going down in 2022 and we are now around 500 new Hive accounts per month.

SPS Price

At the end the price for the main token SPS.

image013.png

SPS has been in a down trend for most of 2022. It seems that starting from January 2023 it has stabilized around the 3 cents and even had a small increase in the price, but it has dropped again recently. If you waited for some cheap SPS this is the cheapest it has been.

All the best

I liked seeing the growth of renting operations. This is real economic activity that could even be treated as more important that DAU statistics. An even better indicator would be the amount of purchases directly made from @splinterlands (Spellbooks + Packs).

There are some high fluctuations in the numbers of players and battles. why exactly this is happening ? are people loosing interesting in playing the game ?

Development over time is very important for the success of any project, If this does not happen, people will not be interested in the project, thus the project will suffer and users will leave slowly slowly. As we all know that in bull market every project was high but in bear market every project graph has come down. But as we are seeing now slowly the user is increasing again as the markets are getting stable. Thanks for sharing these stats.

Very nice that you done this.
It seems me that we are in critical phase and the question is if the game will grow again or suffer more.
What do you expect ?

Cant really tell .... the main thing is for the team to keep grinding and eventually things will improve

Is the slowdown due to the state of the over-all crypto market?

Or have people just got bored with the game and have moved to the next fashionable thing?

Probably a combination of things... overall crypto market for sure has a major role

Thanks for the great overview, it helps give a good high level view of the eco-system. Some food for thought there.

Most of the stats are going down, but Splinterlands is strongest than ever, in my opinion. Ongoing innovations will give their fruits in the next bull run.
