I decided to flex my artistic muscles by painting another realist piece but only doing a quasi-two-tone application of color.
Honestly, I was really getting bored with painting in a semi-realistic style and needed a bit of a challenge so that I could test my mettle. But I also think I became a little shaken (lols) from the commission I was painting for Lindi. That commission pretty much came out of nowhere. I didn't have any time to do a realist study. So every now and again, think I should be doing a couple of these a month just in case. I change the look on her face later to give her that contemptuous look, aka, criminal offensive side.

Process

I started out with a pencil sketch on paper. I haven't been using a lot of traditional medium for a while now. I thought that maybe I should return to my roots and that is charcoal and graphite. After that I scanned the sketch into the computer and then applied a brown tone on top. This is to mimic the glazing and toning that is typical of the old masters especially Caravaggio's paintings. Following that, I applied a little bit of a light tone on top of the skin to give it that volume, because it was it was flat given was a sketch. After that, it was just a matter of rendering the shadows much more deeply. In this instance, I worked in a backwards way. For a lot of my work, I usually start with the shadows, working my way up to the highlights but this time I started in the mids, went up a little bit in the highlights and then went into the shadows.
