Splinterlands | Chaos Legion Demonstrates the Utility of the SPS Token!

Three days ago, the Splinterlands team announced the details for the much awaited Chaos Legion packs. This is the very first time in the game that we are seeing how utility can be built around the SPS governance token and why you should consider holding a bunch of it long-term.

What we know so far from the announcement post is that SPS will play a major role in the Chaos Legion packs pre-sale.

The Chaos Legion presale will allow players to purchase Chaos Legion packs before the set is released and before the packs can be opened and will come with a number of exciting benefits and bonuses for buying early!

Chaos Legion packs will be priced at $4.00 USD each during the presale, and will be able to be purchased using Credits, DEC, or SPS, and there will be a 10% discount for any presale pack purchases made using the Splintershards (SPS) token.

As you can see, holding SPS gives you an edge. While a 10% discount might not seem significant if you are not buying in bulk, think of it cumulatively.

There will be a total of 1 million pre-sale packs available and if you do the math, that will cost $3.6 million if they are all bought with SPS, hypothetically speaking.

That is a total of $400K saved by interested buyers in total.

Rewards for Staking SPS

You may also have noticed that the price of SPS has been going up since the announcement came out.

Why is that?

In addition to the purchase price, players will also need to spend a new VOUCHER token for each Chaos Legion presale pack they wish to purchase. 33,333.333 VOUCHER tokens will be created daily over the course of the 30 presale period (1M VOUCHER tokens in total) and will be awarded to all players who have SPS tokens staked in their in-game account based on the amount staked as a percentage of the total staked across all players in the game.

Well, just holding SPS in your account will not be enough if you want to get in on the pre-sale and the rewards that come with buying Chaos Legion packs early.

To get involved in pre-sale, you will need to earn a new Voucher token. The token can be mined by staking SPS in your account.

It is also important to note that the voucher token will be tradeable so you can always buy it on the market, but I suspect in the early days it will be listed at inflated prices.

You might also have noticed that the "TOTAL STAKED" amount has been increasing very quickly.

In the three days more than 6 million SPS has been staked. At the current prices, that means at least $2 million has been invested in staked SPS in only three days.

So, in that short period, players have raised an extra $2 million. To sell-out the pre-sale packs it will take $3.6 to $4 million. Hmmm, I wonder!

It is quite possible that we could see all the cards in pre-sale get bought up.

So how quickly is that likely to happen?

The Voucher System

With 33,333.333 Voucher tokens printed daily, it is safe to say that only 33,333 Chaos Legion packs can be bought per day. We know that because you will need one voucher for every pack you buy.

Each Chaos Legion presale pack purchased will require one VOUCHER token to be spent, so players who earn fractions of a VOUCHER token (as in the example above) can either sell their tokens on a third-party market, wait until they accumulate a whole token from the daily award, or purchase the remainder that they need from third-party markets.

Quick math gives us the conclusion that Voucher token printing has been deliberately scheduled in such a way that it goes the course of the 30 days of the pre-sale window.

Therefore, the only thing that limits your share of the daily Voucher token pool and thus how many packs you can purchase in pre-sale is the amount of SPS you have staked.

In my case, with 10,000 SPS staked, I am currently guaranteed around 3.33 Voucher tokens daily.

That figure continues to change as the total staked SPS continues to rise.

As you can see, in less than 7 hours, that amount has grown by over 1.5 million SPS if you contrast the screenshot below with the one above.

Final Thoughts.

The Splinterlands community and economy have continued to grow significantly over the past two months since the SPS token airdrop was launched.

This game has changed lives, mine included, and especially the early adopters who invested in the game way before it was this popular.

I have also seen new players come in, some of whom have hit the ground running while others have inevitably struggled. Some of them have complained that it is difficult to level up since the early adopters have a massive head start.

This is what I would tell them.

Early adopters will always have a head start. Think of the Bitcoin whales who continue to HODL'd their coins even today. All the value they accrue is deserved.

Every project of monetary value rewards those who believed in it when it first began.

However, Splinterlands continues to grant new players a new buy-in, this time with SPS and Chaos Legion.

Invest in the future of the game by holding the governance token and get involved in pre-sale if you are financially capable in order to receive incredible incentives such as limited-edition promo card airdrops. These are always so expensive to purchase on the market.

One, two, or even three years from now they will be more valuable in the market and you will probably be immensely grateful you HODL'd them.
