Battle Mage Secrets Weekly - Experimenting and winning

Hello Battle Mage, it’s a new week and we’re playing with the Close Range Ruleset.

As I’ve mentioned in many of my posts already, I’m not really a big fan of ranged attacks. I’m not sure why that is exactly, but my go-to monsters have always been magic and melee. So when I saw the battle for the week, I knew in my head already I was going to completely ignore formulating my line up using the ruleset. How did that end for me? Let’s find out.

RulesetDescription
Close RangeUnits with ranged attacks are allowed to attack in the first position

My opponent’s line up

Summoner12345

My line up and strategy

Summoner123456

My opponent made the mistake of using the same strategy he had used in about 4 of his previous battles. The flaw of his strategy was that he had no sneak of opportunity monsters because he always heavily relied on magic attacks. That was exactly the advantage I needed – no monsters to attack my low health monsters.

I chose to use Tarsa because I needed to boost my melee monsters.

In position 1, I (of course) put Grum Flameblade. I know. I’m just currently experimenting the different ways I can use this bloodlust and see if it’s worth buying him after my rent times out. Anyways, I kept him there because I needed a powerful tank, and because I noticed my opponent loved using magic attacks. I also noticed my opponent uses a low health melee tank mostly, so it would’ve been a good bloodlusty starter boost for Grum.hehe

In Position 2, I had Radiated Brute, a good reach melee. Tarsa’s extra +1 melee attack works really fine with him and I didn’t have to be concerned about his low health because as I already said, my opponent was a magic strategist.

In position 3, I had Scavo Hireling for his armor replacement. Since I couldn't use a tank heal because of limited mana, I thought this would be a nice alternative, and yeah it worked very fine for my tank. Again, no sneaks or opportunists, so nothing to worry about.

In position 4, I threw in a sneak and ambush, Gobalano Soldier because my opponent for whatever reason consistently placed his tank heal at the end, so it would be in my interest to take it out real early.

In position 5, I had Spirit Hoarder, my triage to heal the backline monsters in case my opponent surprised me with a sneak or opportunist. To be honest, this was a poor strategy, because if there indeed was an opportunist, it would probably have taken Spirit Hoarder out very soon.

In the back, I put Antoid Platoon for his mute ability. This was in anticipation of a surprise sneak attacker with no matter than 2 melee attack, which turned out not necessary as you can see.

The Battle

Summoner Buffs took effect before the battle began.

Round 1

Because my sneak attacker was also an ambush, it took out my opponent’s healer at the start of round 1. No heavy damage was conceded on my team, aside my tank taking -3 damage to his armor, leaving him with 2 armor. This was still more than enough.

Round 2

As much damage as they could inflict, most of my monsters missed their attacks because Regal Peryton was my opponent's tank. I remember my man Josediccus talking about how powerful Regal Peryton can be in one of his posts two weeks ago. For whatever reason though, MY Regal Peryton is always unlucky, as I get hit a lot when I use it. Anyways, I still did significant damage to my opponent's Regal Peryton.

Round 3

My sneak make the mistake of killing the martyr at my opponents backline, exciting Quora. I was starting to ge scared at this point, because if you know you know. Lol. I thought Grum will get the chance to buff up by snuffing out Regal Peryton who was on her last life, but Spirit Hoarder stole the chance.

Grum got his chance immediately after killing Fungus Flinger and buffing up. Unfortunately, he wasn't the only one that buffed up - Quora did too. So we now had a two bloodlust face off. Although, this wasn't a fair fight against Quora because my team had several other monsters backing Grum. But she can't really complain because she has an effective attack of 8! Close enough to the attack of my entire team combined. Not forgetting her heal ability.

Round 4

With just one round of attack, she almost killed Grum. Thankfully, the rest of my team gave her a tough time, leaving her on one 1 health at the end of round 4

Final Round

As you'd expect, she healed herself right up. Unfortunately (or should I say fortunately) though, she just didn't have enough health to go a second round with my team, ultimately getting knocked out by Grum!

So yeah, it's another W for me 😂

The Grum is a beast, it's one of those cards I regret not having especially because of it's void magic. It was great to see you used a card that could replace the shield, it made it difficult. This is a strategy to beat a Quora with two Matyr card.

Thanks man

I actually learnt this strategy by chance. I was selecting a line up for a battle and was left with 3 mana to fill the mana cap, but didn’t know which card to use, so I just threw Scavo in and was surprised.

It's a good strategy with the scavo, especially if you're playing against magic, it works best. You learn by just experimenting sometimes. This is the way.
