My Splinterlands Journey

I don’t remember exactly when I found out about splinterlands, as I always saw people posting about around two years ago when I just joined Hive. But as a newbie, I knew nothing about it and I was mostly rather focused on just writing, so I never bothered asking.

I started considering playing when I saw a few of my friends in the Neoxian City talking about it almost always. There’s an entire room dedicated to Splinterlands in the Neoxian City and the things they talked about sometimes used to intrigue me.

However, when I first opened Splinterlands myself to explore the game was when as part of the newbies initiative curriculum, we had a discussion centered on Blockchain Games on Hive. Even then, I did really surface exploration because I was only doing it to complete My newbies initiative assignment as I wasn’t really interested in playing the game itself at the point.

When I truly developed a curiosity for the game was a few days ago. I saw the Armored Up Battle Mage Secrets Game post by Splinterlands and decided I was going to conquer my fews and start playing, and I’ve been learning and trial and erroring my way through since then. So I think it’ll be fair to say that even though I’ve had a Splinterlands account for a long time, I’ve only been playing for 5 days now.

How much time I spend on Splinterlands

On Average, I’d say I spend about 2 hours on Splinterlands everyday. I’m very busy recently, so the only time I get to spare is at midnight between 12am - 2am. It’s honestly the best time to play if you ask me - I have my midnight data package that can support a hotspot to my PC for a long time without worrying about data consumption, and I get to focus completely on the game play without any distractions.

Any accomplishments so far?

No not really. As I said already, I’ve only been for 6 days, so I can’t really do much right now. I’m learning how to play all by myself mostly by trial and error. If you’re a seasoned player, you’ll know that it’ll take me some time to get the ropes right.

As of now, I’m focused more on getting as much practice as I can. I plan to buy my spell book next week, by which time I believe I would’ve gotten enough experience and exposure to different cards and different strategies to get into real battles.

I’ve tried getting into a few real battles and the most recent one I played last night was an utter loss because my opponent unlike me, was part of a guild and so had access to a better deck.

Some upcoming goals

SPS-related

As I’ve learnt that the more staked SPS in your account, the higher your earning potential, over the course of the next 4 months ( Q1 of the year), I plan to stake as much SPS as I can. This is of course after I buy my spell book. Given that I haven’t exactly had a taste of what the SPS earnings looks like, I won’t be able to give an exact projection of how much SPS exactly I’ll want to stake.

Join a Guild

Another huge goal I have is to find and join a guild by the end of Q1 of the year. There are many benefits associated with being part of a guild and I hope to leverage on this to make some new friends, grow my account, get some mentoring and enjoy the game more. I’m looking into guilds right now as I learn how to play and hopefully by the time I gain as much guild-worthy experience, I’ll try to join a guild if they’ll have me. I believe it’s important to not be a burden to your guild, so I will at the least come prepared with some foundation in battle strategy so I can help boost the guild ranking.

Card Rentals

I believe your card deck is one of the most important influencers of what your success on Splinterlands will look like. Hence, after trial and erroring my way through the next 2 weeks, I am positive I probably would’ve identified some cards I might want to rent. I keep saying rent and not buy because I doubt I’ll be able to manage buying at this very early stage. But not just that, I want to rent so I can test out different cards, do some more exploring, before I decide to commit to my favorite cards in the long term.

As I read from an experienced player earlier today, buying cards without caution as a beginner might just result in you selling them later as you realize the card is not that useful is collecting dust in your collection.

Advice for beginners

You could say that I am not experienced enough to be advising beginners considering that I myself am a beginner.

On the other hand, like a friend pointed out, maybe I am in the best position to give this advise since I’m a beginner myself.

Anyways, a short form of what I already said in this post is to take your time to learn the basics. The basics includes learning about cards and their abilities, battle order, stats like mana cost, speed, and why they’re important.

And most importantly, practice a lot! The practice section is there for you to use at mo cost and without any initial investment. You can practice absolutely for free and even play some battles (of course you won’t be able to earn much until you buy a spell book though). What practicing will do for you is that for each new battle, it’ll help you learn about new cards and different the strategies. Once you have enough practice under your belt, you can try to take a real battle to put your practice into action. If you lose in your first few rounds, don’t be discouraged. I doubt anyone jumped on a never-ending winning streak immediately they started playing.

The last tip I’ll leave you with is probably not to jump straight to buying cards immediately you start. Take your time and do some due diligence exploring and practicing before you decide to start throwing money around on cards. You most likely will regret it if you do it too early.

Most importantly, throw in some little cash to buy a decent deck when it's the bull market. It'll Mostly benefit you to some extent. You're getting a hang of the game. It takes a while but it can be fun and intriguing

I understand that the bull market is when we can take some profits on Hive, but wouldn’t cards also be more expensive in the bull market too?

Well you can also get them now, you'll profit from getting them now than in the bull market, but getting them now is also tough because we all know money is hard when the market isn't too good yet

True. I’ll try to start building my deck after I buy a spell book next week. By then, maybe I’ll have a fair idea of what a decent deck looks like for me. Do you have any recommendations on cards to look out for as a beginner? Maybe I can check them out and see how I can use them with other cards to build strategies.

The cards you enjoy using for free now are the cards you should look to getting. You must look at the cards you currently enjoying using, plus study your opponent and look at some of their cards and look across elements too. When you're ready then we'll look at other options too.
